[1367] In her obituary, it states, "ln 1857 she married Mr. William Beasley, of Culpeper county and went on a bridal tour to California in search of gold. Her husband dying there eight months after arrival she was compelled to return to Virginia, and has always made her home here since." Presuming the birth records and obituary are correct, Julia Claggett was about 13 years old when married. We presume her husband William Beasley is not quite that young, but still in his youth. Present at his marriage to Julia Claggett: William Fanny S. McConchie Mary A. Benj. T. While a William Beasley b. abt. 1838 is listed in the 1850 census in Powhatan, VA, as a member of the John and Frances Beasley household, it's not clear that our William is their child. He is 12 years old, so that if Frances were his mother, she would have been 13. William is also listed after James, Lucy, and non-family member, Martha Indan, which leads me to believe he might be the brother to John W. Beasley, instead of his son. Further reinforcing that possibility, William Beasley's birthplace is given as Chesterfield, while James and Lucy were born in Powhatan. Powhatan and New Baltimore, where Julia Claggett was born and raised, are but a stone's throw from each other. There are two other William Beasleys who were born approximately 20-25 years prior to their marriage and were still living in Virginia during the 1850 census. One lived in St Georges Parish, Accomac, VA., on the Atlantic barrier islands, and the other near the North Carolina border.
