[5313] Family of John Paul Jones

[5309] Obituary Mrs. Mary Phelps Mrs. Mary phelps, pioneer of Yankton, died quite suddenly at Sacred Heart Hostital at 7:30 last evening, of complications due to advanced age, but so well had she been of late that that the news of her death was a surprise to both immediate relatives and her many friends in the community. Mrs. Phelps had been visting her daughter, Mrs. Peter Rokusek. Of 509 Locust Street, and only the day before decided to go the the hospital for care and treatment. The end came after a bright and comfortable day, during which Mrs. Phelps appeared wonderfully well and able to visit with the members of the family. Mary Wilson Brown was born at St. Charles, Illionis, april 7, 1846, where she spent her early years. At Caledonia, Minn. Miss brown was married to Edward Phelps, the date of their marriage being August 10, 1869. They moved to Yankton in 1879 and took up a homestead of 160 acres west of the city, where they resided many years and raised their family. In 1902 the old farm was sold and Mr. AND Mrs. Phelps moved to Parker to reside on a farm they owned there, and Mr. Phelps died there May 18, 1904. Since her husband's death Mrs. Phelps has resided at Parker, with frequent long visits here, where she was very widely known and very popular, especially among her old friends in the woman's relief corps, where for many years she was a very active member. The deceased was all her life a member of the Presbyterian faith. The surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. Peter Pokusek, of Yankton; and Mrs. Mary Bones, of Oregon, and two sons, Edward of Parker and John of Oregon. [11430] John's sponsors were: Johannes Rocker and Johannes Scheid and he was baptized on Sept 25, 1797. Birth Source: Church book records of Eichloch (now known as Worrstadt), Germany. Information copied by Rudolf Scheid March 30, 1987. Marriage witnesses were: Johannes Rocker, Johannes Scheid. A snowball bush marked John's grave in the 1950's and was planted by Susan (Staus) Scheid. It is located at the N.W. part of the cemetery, in the first row toward the midpoint. John died at the home of Christ Rushin Elmore, WI. I discovered in the Appleton Public Library that Mrs. Hilde Henkel from Stevens Point, WI had filed a Pioneer or Century Certificate for John Philip and Katherine E. (Weiskopf) Scheid at the State Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin.

[11431] Maria's sponsors were: Maria Ottilie Weisskopf and Maria Cath. Lumbinand she was baptized on March 16, 1796. Katherine is buried with her daughter, Katherine in a single grave inWayne, WI.She died only a few hours before her daughter did, of what wedo not know. The grave is about 1/4 mile east of the cemetery in thebrambles on top of a big hill and is surrounded by only two or threeother graves. Originally, when we first saw it, the stone was lying on its side butsince then someone has placed it upright again. So far, we have no idea what mother and daughter died of because theydied within just a few hours of each other.

[11432] Margarethe's sponsors were: Cath. Margarethe Scheid and Elisab. Marg.Weiskopf. Birth Date per Church book records at Eichloch, Germany; copied by RudolfScheid, March 30, 1987. Very little could be found or learned about Margaret. She was one of thefirst Scheid's to immigrate and lived in Kansas. Due to variousmarriages she became quite lost to the family. Per Dr. Rudolph Scheid: On May 28, 1987 a Marilyn MIller from Arlington,VA came to Worrstadt, Germany to do research on her grandmother,Margarethe Scheid born Sept. 13, 1820. Could this be one and the sameperson even though the birth date is slightly off??? Rudolph could onlyfind our Margarethe born Aug. 19, 1820.

[11433] Philip's sponsors were: Phil. Peter Weiskopf. Phillip was the second of the family to immigrate and was either lost atsea coming over to America or actually arrived and was then lost at seaafter he became a sailor.

[11434] Lorenz Wilhelm's sponsors were: Lorenz Scheid and Wilhelm Scheid. William's actual place of birth was three miles from a small town calledDensheim. Death per Fond du Lac County, WI death records, Volume 4, Page 342. Obituary in Kewaskum, Statesman states that: Deceased was born inEichlach Hessen, Darmstadt in 1824 and emigrated to America when he wseighteen years of age and located at New Orleans where he resided fiveyears and then came to Wisconsin.

[11445] Christoph's sponsors were: Andreas Friedrich Christoph Weiskopf. Death per Fond du Lac County death records, Volume 3, Number 482.

[11449] Anna's sponsors were: A.M. Weiskopf.

[11423] Jacob's sponsors were: Christoph Scheid. Jacob was 15 years old when he immigrated with his parents, Phillip andMary Scheid who settled in Ashford, WI. Philip took up 240 acres ofland, all covered with timber but undeveloped. He cleared the land andwith the timber built a log shanty. Then he sold out to his son, Jacob,Sr. who operated it until 1899. Jacob, Sr. then sold it to his son,Daniel. From Al Hodnett: Information Sources: SCHEID Family Records, Dr. MiloScheid; SCHEID Family Records, Hilde Henkel, Stevens Point, WI; US Census1860 - 1900; newspaper obituaries; Wisconsin vital records; Church bookrecords of Eichloch (now Worrstadt), Germany - copied by Rudolf Scheid,March 30, 1987. From Al Hodnett: Jacob came to the United States from Germany about1847. Settled in Town of Ashford, Fond du Lac County, WI. I discovered in the Appleton Public Library that Mrs. Hilde Henkel ofStevens Point, WI had filed a Pioneer or Century Certificate for Jacoband Katherine (Schaub) Scheid in the State Historical Society in Madison,Wisconsin. Al Hodnett has listed that Jacob's second wife' name was Maria Blattnesand Nancy has her listed as Maria Manus but both have the same birth, death and marriage dates. This has to be verified yet which one iscorrect.

[11400] Catharina's sponsors were: Cath. Scheid. Katherine is buried with her mother in a single grave on a cemetery inWayne, WI. The grave is actually about 1/4 mile east of the cemetery inthe brambles on top of a big hill. There are only two or three othergraves surrounding it. The gravestone was originally knocked over, probably from nature itself but one day we discovered that someone hadplaced it upright again. I have a picture of it. So far, we have noidea what she died of or what her daughter died of. All we know is thatthey died within hours of each other on the same day. Originally, themarkers read as follows: At the north: Katherine Scheid - Born a Weiskopf Died 1863 - age 65 At the south: Catherine Terlinden Born: Jan 15, 1835 Died: May 21, 1863 These Scheid's were known as the "Cathedral Scheid's back then in Germany.

[11450] Elisabetha's sponsors were: Elisabeth Weiskopf. Death per Fond du Lac County, WI death records, Volume 1, Page 38.
