[386] William H. Diuguid is a native of Virginia and came to Calloway County with his parents in 1835; he is a cabinet-maker by trade (1860 Census) and carried on business a number of years in Murray, but has given his attention more of late years to agricultural pursuits. His wife, Catherine Churchill, is a native of this State. Their union has been blessed with nine children. --"History of Kentucky Illustrated", Todd/Perrin/Kniffen, Edition 1. Published in 1885 by F.A.Battey Publishing Co. Louisville, KY. Calloway Co.

[230] Dates based on Diuguid family Bible and on Bessie Roberts Diuguid's birth certificate. A hand-written note among Anna Christy Phelps' papers provides a death date. The only picture of Charles [sic] or George Diuguid is a photograph on the back of which his granddaughter Anne Christy Phelps has written, "Great Grandfather Charles Diuguid, Paducah, KY, Attorney at Law." "He was an attorney in Paducah his whole life." He also owned land in Henrico Co., VA. in 1762 as the State Archives show a will on page 1881 written by Joseph Bridgewater which states that his land adjoins that of William Diuguid. (Also see pg. 6 for Donald family in Henrico Co.) The following abstract taken from Albemarle Surveys: "William Diuguid of Albemarle Co. conveyed 156 acres on south side of Fluvanna River to Thos. McDaniel of St. Anne's Parish in 1748". " On Nov. 26 1756, William Diuguid received 400 acres of land under Piney Ridge on a branch of Bent Creek, then Albemarle Co. (Patent 141 - 1756). On 26 June 1759, William Diuguid received 400 acres on both sides of Horn Quarter Run of Willis River in Cumberland Co. (Patents No. 32756-61, page 577). An old Surveyors plat book that survived the 1869 fire that burned the Buckingham Co. Court House and a copy held in the VA. State Library refers to properties of William Diuguid on several occasions.

[1036] EDWIN S. DIUGUID -- of Murray, was born in Calloway County, August 13, 1854. His father, William H. Diuguid, is a native of Virginia, and came to Calloway County with his parents in 1835; he is a cabinet-maker by trade and carried on business a number of years in Murray, but has given his attention more of late years to agricultural pursuits. His mother, Catherine Churchill, is a native of this State. [His parents'] union has been blessed with nine children of whom our subject is the fifth. The latter was reared on a farm, principally, and attended the district schools of the neighborhood, and after a years's course at the Murray Institute, taught school for a term of five months; for four years following he was employed as salesman by J. D. A. Hale of Murray, two years. With the money thus earned he was enabled to enter a business partnership with W. P. Garlin. The firm continued four years up to 1884, since which date Mr. Duiguid has been alone. He carries a large line of groceries, hardware, and general merchandise, and enjoys a flourishing trade. Mr. Duiguid is a deacon in the Christian Church, and is one of the trustees of the town. He married, December 9, 1879, Miss Lottie C. Scott, a native of Mississippi. They have two children: Robert S. and Mary E." --"History of Kentucky Illustrated", Todd/Perrin/Kniffen, Edition 1. Published in 1885 by F.A.Battey Publishing Co. Louisville, KY. Calloway Co. "Edward Samuel (name changed) was the president of the Bank of Murray." William Diuguid of Buckingham County, Virginia. p 237.

[1042] Guthrie Diuguid reportedly had an affair with negro Lube Martin's wife. Lube confronted the police chief in the spring of 1916, and words and accusations were exchanged over a period of time. On Saturday, Dec 9, 1916, Guthrie drew his weapon and shot at Lube. Lube returned fire and killed the white officer. A mob demanded the judge turn Lube over and the judge, fearful for his life, agreed. The governor intervened and prevented a lynching. Lube Martin was convicted of murder and executed in the electric chair on July 25, 1919. Published in "The Independent", Volume 89, January - March 1917
