[7011] Fort de Chartres was a massive fortress, the last of three eighteenth-century forts by that name erected near the Mississippi River by France's colonial government. Its walls, 15 feet high and 3 feet thick, enclose approximately four acres and was the center of French control in the Illinois Country. From 1720 to 1763 French administration of the Illinois Country was centered at the forts, built successively over a 40-year period on or near the same site.
The stone fort was built in the 1750s and abandoned in 1771. The British made little use of their new possession, which they renamed Fort Cavendish. Military engineers attempted to control erosion caused by the Mississippi, which already threatened to swallow the south wall.
France surrendered Illinois, along with most of its North American possessions, to Great Britain in the 1763 Treaty of Paris that ended the Seven Years' War. Two years later the fort was surrendered to the British. But British military leaders in North America soon deemed the fort of little practical value and ordered it abandoned in 1771, ending its use as a military post.

[10749] Moved to Jacksonville, IL 1851 & Springfield, IL 1856. Between 1843 and 1851, he was United States Congressman, 2nd District IL, (D).
Estate worth $55,000 in 1860.
John Alexander McClernand's childhood was spent in Shawneetown, Illinois. In the 1840's, he moved to Jacksonville, Illinois and finally to Springfield, Illinois where he lived for almost fifty years and where he subsequently died in 1900. Biographer, Stan Buckles, describes McClernand's physical appearance, "In stature John A. McClernand was a little above medium height and rather spare built, but was of a tough and wiry fiber. As a man he was not devoid of vanity, and he had an excitable temper, yet was placable and did not cherish animosity (Past &Present of Sangamon County)."
McClernand was a lawyer, soldier and statesman his entire life. In 1832 he was admitted to the Bar and volunteered in the Black Hawk War against Fox & Sac Indians. He served as a Democrat in the Illinois State Legislature from 1836-1842. After his tenure in the State Legislature, McClernand was elected to six terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1843-1851 and back again 1859-1861. During his tenure McClernand served as Chairman of Public Lands and Foreign Affairs. In 1861, he resigned to accept a commission of brigadier general by President Lincoln and was promoted to major General 1862. General McClernand was a principle player in the battles of Belmont, Fort Donelson, Fort Henry, Shiloh, The Vicksburg Campaign, and The Red River Expedition.
The highlight of McClernand's military career must be considered the Vicksburg Expedition. He single-handedly raised the bulk of the troops for the Expedition and was supposed to be the campaign's commanding general. Unfortunately, backroom dealing by West Point Regulars deprived John McClernand of the opportunity to command the entire expedition. Under the direction of General Grant, McClernand was regulated to subordinate command of the XIII Corps. Grant and other professional soldiers were extremely jealous of McClernand's natural fighting abilities and influential access to President Lincoln.
In the end, General Grant relieved McClernand for an oversight and technicality in which McClernand failed to forward a press release on to Grant for his approval. After several months, McClernand was restored to the command of the XIII corps, which was engaged in Nathaniel Banks' Red River Expedition. Although the Red River Campaign was far away from General Grant who was closing in on Robert E. Lee in the Eastern Theater, McClernand was unable to recapture his prominence. This time, McClernand's rising star was shot down by a near-fatal attack of malaria, and on November 30, 1864, his resignation was accepted by the War Department.
Once back in Springfield, McClernand was slowly able to recover from his health problems and rebuild his law practice. However, McClernand was not able to recover his political career. For the next eighteen years and five presidential administrations, the White House was controlled by the Republicans. As a loyal democrat, John McClernand's own dreams of becoming President were over. This is not to say that McClernand did not retain some amount of influence. McClernand served as a delegate to the 1868 Democratic National Convention held in Philadelphia. In 1870, he was elected Circuit Court Judge for the Sangamon District, and held the post until 1873. In 1876, McClernand went back the Democratic National Convention, but this time as its Chairman. McClernand finished his political career by serving on President Grover Cleveland's Utah Commission. It was John McClernand who spearheaded the negotiations with the Mormons, which ended polygamy and brought Utah into the Union. President Cleveland saw McClernand for what he was, the elder statesmen of his party. Cleveland never hesitated in corresponding with the old General and former Congressman about issues of the day. Until the very end, McClernand was a welcome guest on the lecture circuit and traveled all over the country giving speeches. McClernand loved nothing more than to speak out against, or as the General put it "agitate," the causes and issues that he did not believe in.
What should be considered John McClernand's greatest legacy was his commitment to public education. As a member of the State Legislature and the United States Congress, McClernand repeatedly stood up for public education. Whether it was voting for or crafting bills, John McClernand was at the forefront in bringing education to the common people. McClernand even donated his own home to the education cause, bringing about the first public school to be opened in Springfield. The original building has been long since been destroyed, but a re-built grade school is still in operation on the original site. McClernand Grade School is currently a national historic landmark and a living monument to the man who donated the land and his life to the public. John Alexander McClernand was one of Illinois' most colorful and heroic men and should be remember by his country as one of its proudest patriots. Hopefully, one day he will have his proper place in history.

When Helen & Wirt gave birth to their only son, Willie, it waswondered why Helen had chosen the middle name of Joseph for her son. Theanswer lied within Helen's formal education, which would not be revealeduntil she was on her deathbed.
In the 1860's schooling for women, must less a college education wasconsidered unimportant and even discouraged. However, Helen's father,John McClernand did not go along with that line of thinking. In fact,he was a strong believer that all his children should receive the besteducation possible, including attending college. Boys of course couldeasily enroll at a college or university, but the girls, facing limitedoptions, were forced to attend catholic finishing schools in order tocomplete their higher education.
It was while attending finishing school that Helen converted toCatholicism. No one. including her father or husband ever knew of herfaith. It was not until she was in the last stages of consumption, whenHelen asked for her rosary beads, did truth came out. The McClernandscame from a very strict Baptist background in Jacksonville to a veryconservative Presbyterian congregation in Springfield. Fearful that thefamily would shun her, Helen was probably scared to disclose her truefaith. Her Catholicism was undoubtedly the seed for son's middle ofJoseph.

[11287] Anne of Cleves was the fourth wife of King Henry VIII; it was a very brief marriage, to the astonishment of all observers but the relief of both spouses. Henry infamously referred to his bride as a 'Flanders mare' and told courtiers and ambassadors that he could not perform his husbandly duties because of Anne's appearance.
Henry had sought out Catholic princesses like Marie de Guise and his fifth wife would be a Catholic as well. Despite the Henrician 'reformation', England and its monarch remained a Catholic nation, albeit one in which supreme authority resided within the king rather than the pope. But Henry's influential advisor, Thomas Cromwell, wanted England to ally herself with a Protestant nation that also rejected papal authority. Cromwell recognized the inexorable Catholic decline which was only just beginning to occur; the king's assumption of supreme authority had merely been the first and most spectacular opening shot in a new religious war. Raised to be a churchman until his brother's untimely death and deeply interested in theological debate, Henry VIII didn't appreciate the Pandora's Box of change he had opened. Cromwell, younger and more philosophically attuned to the attitudes of the rising middle class, did appreciate it. And he approved of it. The marriage to Anne of Cleves would openly ally England with a Protestant duchy, thus making the 'reformation' even more settled.
Henry VIII's previous two marriages had been love matches; he had been quite independent in choosing women of his own court to marry. But this fourth marriage was necessarily a more diplomatic endeavor. In this, the king returned to the traditional role of kings searching for brides; he also understood that, since the Act of Supremacy in 1534, England stood dangerously isolated amongst the Catholic powers of Spain and France.
Anne's reaction to Henry's physical charms was not recorded, but she agreed to an annulment very quickly and remained in England for the rest of her life. Henry was grateful for her cooperation and granted her a generous income and several homes, including Hever Castle. Anne enjoyed an independent lifestyle denied most women, often visiting Henry's court as an honored guest. Her fondness for English ale and gambling were her only vices. Along with her successor as Henry's wife, Catherine Howard, Anne remains a mysterious figure about whom too little is known. Had she and Henry remained married and had children, the course of English history might have changed dramatically. But the mysteries of physical attraction denied Anne her place on the throne, ended the brilliant career of Thomas Cromwell, and thrust the king into the arms of his ill-fated fifth queen, Catherine Howard.
