[4792] [Wilds-Phelps.FTW]

~from email of Bob Geffin via Alex Phelps-Penry, 02-09-00:

~"- WWP's oldest son, John Jay Phelps, was commissioned an Ensign in the USNR and served during the Spanish American War. He was a world class yachtsman and sailed around the world in his yacht the "Brunhilde" breaking some sort of record (I don't recall which). I have visions of him sailing his yacht into Santiago Bay and lobbing champagne bottles at the Cubans. Anyway, I have seen several pictures of him in his naval uniform. I've never seen WWP in a uniform. He was a statesman, not a military man. In fact, it appears he rather prided himself in his formal attire and always with a red ascot. There are such pictures of him hanging in the NJ Statehouse in Trenton and at the Teaneck P.L. Likewise, being a newspaperman, it's unlikely that Sheffield Phelps would have appeared in uniform. I still think it was WWP the 2nd and his uncle John Jay P. that were the military men."

Dossie was in Harwichport; into racing sailboats and catboats into her80's; lived in the Dakota Apts in New York, very posh -- filled withmedieval and renaissance artifacts. She had two sons who are now dead.
