[302] Based on conversations with his grandaughter, Anna Christy Phelps. He died when she was a teenager. Also based on 1880 Census, Vol 39, E.D. 14, Sheet 16, Line 24 the family lived on Manning Street in Alton, Illinios, and that George was 'deaf and dumb' and employed as a 'Lightening Rod Agnt'.
A notarized document signed by Herbert's grandmother, attests to grandson Herbert Christy's birth at 714 South Fourth Street, between Ohio and Tennessee Streets, in Paducah in Oct 1898.
The 1900 census shows them still residing at that address:
Christy, G. W. Head Feb 1841
Lizzie Wife Sept 1848
George son June 1881
George's occupation at age 14 is given as "telegraph operator."
According to the 1910 census from Santa Cruz, George employment was "own income."
His headstone is inscribed, "Geo. W. Christy CO F 27 ILL INF". His military records are spelled "Cristy". He is listed as, "Cristy, George W Pvt F 27 IL US INF [from] ALTON." Mustered Aug 17, 1861, discharged "Jan 1, 1864; disabil."
His Civil War pension records are found under George W. Christy of Kentucky and California. George originally applied for his pension on 12 June 1889; his widow Lizzie applied for the pension on 28 July 1913, Certificate No. 766,157. This date is at variance with his death date of 5 Jul 1915.
His pension card states that his disability "nearly total deafness, both ears, res. in total deafness of same." It also states that he lived at 7 Benito Way, Santa Cruz, California
Civil War Battles/Campaigns Engaged in by the 27th Illinois Infantry Regiment from 1861 to late 1863 include Belmont, New Madrid/Island No. 10, Siege of Corinth, Stone's River (Murfreesboro), Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge (Chattanooga).
[311]
According to census records, Lizzie Christy was living in Little Rock with her daughter Carrie in 1930.
According to her grandaughter, Annie Christy Phelps, when she died on May 31, 1932 Lizzy was visiting Little Rock, Arkansas but living with family in Paducah, Kentucky.
When Elizabeth died, her body was transported home to Paducah by train and Lizzie was buried in Paducah. Arrangements were made by E.E. Stephens, her brother, who lived in Metropolis, Illinois at the time. She was interred in the Stephens lot in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah on 6-2-1932.
Elizabeth's birth date is based on an insurance application by Guy Christy to the "Modern Woodman of America," dated Aug 4, 1903, giving his mother's age as 53. Supplemental birth date info calculated from affadavit signed by Guy Herbert Christy's grandmother on July 29, 1931, in which she states she is 82 years old.
At the time of her death, all of her brothers except E.E. lived in Shaw, Mississippi. E.E. lived in Metropolis, Illinois. Her obituary in the Paducah Sun-Democrat reports that, "Another brother, the postmaster at Hickman, Ky., died recently."
Obituary: Mrs. Elizabeth Christy
Mrs. Elizabeth Christy, aged 83, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carrie Nipper, 2404 Gaines Street, at 5 p.m. Tuesday. She is survived by her daughter, one son, G. H. Paducah Sun Democrat, Obituary, June 1, 1932.
[246] In late 1897 or early 1898, Guy Herbert and Bessie Roberts Christy moved 190 miles southeast to Paducah, Kentucky. Their children Herbert Estelle and Annie Elizabeth were born in Paducah, Kentucky in 1898 and 1899, respectively. Her grandparents in their 50s moved with them.
According to the 1900 census, the family still lived on 714 S. Fourth Street in Paducah, down near the railroad tracks. This was just about five blocks from the Ohio River.
Guy was a farrier who "made horseshoes to fit and correct different hoof conditions and deformaties. These were used for horses used in drawing carriages, hacks, buggies, and buckboards of the era. Interested in his work, as he made unusual shoes, he formed the hobby of making an additional one for himself, until he had 84 shoes."
"In 1900, he had his collection nickel plated, placed in a frame lined with black velvet, and it then hung on the walls of his blacksmith shop."
According to the 1910 census, Guy and family lived at 9 Benito Ave. and his father and mother lived next door at 7 Benito Ave. in Santa Cruz, California.
"About 1916 [when he moved from Santa Cruz to San Francisco], during World War I, he removed the shoes, wrapped them individually, and placed them in a box. Before he passed away in 1947, at the age of 76, he asked me to take care of his prized shoes." (Harold Bartle "Bart" Phelps, August 10, 1980)
Bart and Betty Phelps donated the shoes in 1980 to the College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University at Pullman, Washington.
Upon arriving in Santa Cruz in late 1907, he apparently attempted to find work in San Francisco. Conditions were not favorable there, and he then went to Nevada to the silver mines, to see if he could find work there. By 1909 he had his own blacksmith shop in Santa Cruz. However, as fewer and fewer horses where needed, and thus blacksmiths, he decided he needed to find a new line of work. In 1915 the family moved to San Francisco where Guy learned welding at the Heald School. He was employed there from the middle of 1916 to the middle of 1917. In October 1918, the family lived in the Glasgow Apartments at 525 Turk and Larkin Streets in San Francisco. (Source: Western Union Telegram) In January 1920, according to the Census, Guy was a welder in an autoshop; Bessie worked as a sales clerk in a store, and Anne was a stenographer in an auto dealership on Van Ness. In late 1921, Guy returned to Heald for about two years, where he became the welding and blacksmith instructor.
In the 1930 Census, he and Bessie continued to live in the Glasgow Apartments. Guys birthplace is mistakenly given as Scotland, but then the entry appears to be crossed out and possibly "IL" is added. His parents' birthplaces are Illinois, and Bessie's parents' are Kentucky. The monthly rent was $35 and they did not own a radio. In 1935, they were managing the Richelieu Apartments at 3415 22nd St. in San Francisco, California. In the 1940s, Guy and Bessie moved to 1574 - 78th Ave. in Oakland.
Bessie died in March, 1947, and eight months later, when Guy died, their daughter Anne and her husband Bart expected to find some money hidden in the house, and they looked throughout the house several times, but only found several small envelopes with a few dollars in them. Shortly afterwards, Betty had a dream and she told Bart to look in the heater compartment over the top of the door. There they found $1500 in an envelope.
A note from the Madison County, Illinois, county clerk, dated July 30, 1935, states that no record can be found for Guy's birth as records were not kept until later.
A wedding certificate gives his wedding date as June 16, 1897, in Illinois. The city's name is illegible. Burial plot documents shown location as Cypress Lawn, Colma, California as Grave 11, Lot 318, Section Palm. Death certificate used for all dates shown.
[637] On Sept 10, 1882, a friend wrote eight year old Carrie a "Forget Me Not" card which was found in the inside leaf of an ancient copy of Robinson Crusoe, published in 1869:
Dear Carrie,
As oer Life stormy sea we go
each with the same great port in view
Remember thought apart we vow
That one firm friend still thinks of you
Your loving cousin,
Eva B. Wagoner
Upper Alton
According to the 1880 census, thirteen year old Eva Wagoner lived with her father J.C. and sister May Wagoner on Broadway St. in Upper Alton. J.C. was born in Pennsylvania, as were both his parents; the two girls were born in Illinois. J.C. was a retail grocer. He was born in 1830; May in 1863; and Eva in 1867. Eva was 15 years old when she wrote the poem to her friend Carrie. Carrie would have been eight.
It may be fair to surmise that this is the time the Christy family left Alton, Illinois.
In the 1910 census, Carrie is living with her mother and father in Santa Cruz, California with her daughter Camille. Her husband is not present.
In the 1920 census, Carrie and Camille are living in an apartment building at 1406 West South St., Los Angeles, California.
According to her mother's obituary, Sarah was visiting her daughter Carrie in Little Rock when she died on Tuesday, May 31, 1932. The obiturary reports that Carrie resided at 2404 Gaines Street, Little Rock, Arkansas. The 1930 census shows that Carrie and Elizabeth shared the house with a husband and wife and a housekeeper. Carrie's monthly rent was $35. The Gates rent was also $35. They rented rooms from a David and Kate Gates. Carrie's marital status is given in the 1930 census as divorced.
[10096] While George's name is not previously found, he is listed in the 1900 census as living with his parents in Paducah.
George died in El Paso, Texas. His death certificate lists his residence as Little Rock, Arkansas. It also reports that he is widowed.
