[14263]
Husband Age: 40
Wife Age: 18. It's apparent that she lied about her age; she was actually 14.
[1367] In her obituary, it states, "ln 1857 she married Mr. William Beasley, of Culpeper county and went on a bridal tour to California in search of gold. Her husband dying there eight months after arrival she was compelled to return to Virginia, and has always made her home here since."
Presuming the birth records and obituary are correct, Julia Claggett was about 13 years old when married. William was born in 1818.
Their son William A. Beasley married Fanny S. McConchie on June 30, 1885 in Fauquier County, Virginia.William's mother Julia and her parents Mary A. Fletcher and Benjamin F. McConchie were mentioned in the marriage record.
A William Beasley was b. abt. 1838 is listed in the 1850 census in Powhatan, VA, as a member of the John and Frances Beasley household, it's unlikely that our William is their child. He is 12 years old, so that if Frances were his mother, she would have been 13. William is also listed after James, Lucy, and non-family member, Martha Indan, which leads me to believe he might be the brother to John W. Beasley, instead of his son. Further reinforcing that possibility, William Beasley's birthplace is given as Chesterfield, while James and Lucy were born in Powhatan.
Powhatan and New Baltimore, where Julia Claggett was born and raised, are but a stone's throw from each other.
There are two other William Beasleys who were born approximately 20-25 years prior to their marriage and were still living in Virginia during the 1850 census. One lived in St Georges Parish, Accomac, VA., on the Atlantic barrier islands, and the other near the North Carolina border.
[662] In the 1860 census, Julia and her one year old son William A. are living with her mother in Fauquier County. She married her first cousin James D. Kirby eight years later.
DEATH OF MRS. J. D. KIRBY.
Mrs. Julia C. Kirby, widow of the late Captain J. D. Kirby, of the old [Co. K, 17th VA Inf.,] Warrenton Rifles, died at her home in Warrenton, Va., August the first, 1921. Mrs. Kirby was born at Snow Hill near New Baltimore seventy-eight years ago, and was the daughter of Colonel Samuel Claggett and his wife, Mrs. Julia Sanford Claggett. ln 1857 she married Mr. William Beasley, of Culpeper county and went on a bridal tour to California in search of gold. Her husband dying there eight months after arrival she was compelled to return to Virginia, and has always made her home here since.
In early womanhood she was converted under the preaching of Rev. W. D. Thomas and was baptized by him into the Broad Run Baptist church, and was a faithful and consistent member. In 1868 she married Captain Kirby and making Warrenton her home moved her membership to the Warrenton church. Mrs. Kirby leaves five sons and one daughter to mourn her loss; William A. Beasley, of Colorado, James D. and Walter Kirby, of Washington. John and Ralph S. Kirby and Miss Constance Kirby of Warrenton, besides many relatives in this and adjoining counties.
She was a devoted mother, a good neighbor and was loved and respected by many friends. She was quietly laid to rest in Warrenton cemetery August One third, Rev. H. L. Bivens, of the Methodist church, offciating.
W. H. R.
[1370] In the 1870 census, he is attending school in Fauquier County.
In the 1880 census, a William A. Beasley age 22 b. in Virginia is listed as a boarder living on Howard St. in St. Louis, Missouri. His trade is carriage maker. William's stepfather James D. Kirby was a wheelwright, as was one of James' sons. However, the birthplace for this William's mother and father is given as California. If this is the same William Beasley, a stopover in St. Louis might make some sense. According to his mother's obituary, he was in Colorado in 1921.

[1012] Diuguid Undertakers During the Civil War
George A. Diuguid
1821-1893
The Diuguid mortuary was originally established in 1817 by Sampson Diuguid and a Mr. Winston. Their business, which is still in operation today, is the second oldest funeral home in the United States, and the oldest in the South. It was the only undertaking establishment in Lynchburg until the late 1860s.
During the Civil War, Sampson Diuguid's son, George A. Diuguid ran the family business, which was responsible for both civilian and military burials. Diuguid and his workshop ultimately buried over 3000 Union and Confederate soldiers in Lynchburg, or sent their bodies home for burial.
George Diuguid kept excellent records of every burial or removal during the war. He made notations of each soldier's name, military unit, place of death, date of burial, gravesite, and coffin or body measurements. His precise mortuary records enabled the federal goverment to remove the remains of 200 Union soldiers in 1866 to a national cemetery near Petersburg. They also enabled the women of the Lynchburg Confederate Memorial Association to mark each soldier's grave with its own headstone in the early twentieth-century.
"Diuguid Undertakers During the Civil War," 28 August 2001 https://www.gravegarden.org/diuguid.htm (December 28, 2002)
On 11 May 1885, one month before the death of George Alexander Diuguid, "Decoration Day", a day celebrated by honoring the Confederate war dead, was termed a "brilliant affair." An outstanding achievement of the Confederate Ladies Memorial Association was the placement at each soldier's grave of a stone giving the man's initials, his state, and the unit to which he belonged. The Virginia legislature appropriated funds for this work and it was the unique records kept by George A. Diuguid that made it possible.

[3313]
Charles was born in 1600 and married Henrietta Maria, daughter of the King of France. Their children were: Charles, Mary, James, Elizabeth, Anne, Catherine, Henry and Henrietta Anne.
Charles' childhood was spent, mainly in the shadow of his elder brother, the Prince of Wales, who died when Charles was twelve years old.
Charles managed to persuade his father into a war with Spain. This war did not occur until Charles, himself was on the throne, and it then became a war with France also. War need great expense, which was not readily available, and Charles levied huge taxes and imposed martial law.
The Commons at Parliament were not happy with Charles views and ideas. They created the 'Petition of Right', which made all the rulings made by Charles illegal. However Charles immediately dissolved Parliament, imprisoned all the members and became a dictator for eleven years. As the years passed, it became more obvious that the people were restless. It was the religious liturgy passed by the Archbishop Laud, which saw the English and Scottish Churches as a being within the whole of the Catholic Church and which completely demolished Puritanism. The Scots were understandably furious and created an army based in the North of England.
A shy and dignified figure, he was popular at the time of his coronation, but he immediately offended his Protestant subjects by his marriage to the Catholic Henrietta Maria, sister of Louis XIII of France. Charles's favorite, Buckingham, was unpopular, and the foreign ventures under Buckingham's guidance were unfortunate, particularly the unsuccessful expedition to Cádiz (1625) and the two disastrous attempts to relieve French Protestants in La Rochelle (1627 and 1628). Nor would Parliament willingly grant money to help Charles's sister, Elizabeth of Bohemia, and the Protestants in the Thirty Years War. The reign eventuated in the bitter struggle for supremacy between the king and Parliament that finally resulted in the English civil war.
Parliament had a substantial role in the making of money grants to the king and adopted the tactic of withholding grants until its grievances were redressed. The Parliament of 1625 refused money, demanded ministers it could trust, and was soon dissolved by Charles. That of 1626 was dissolved when it started impeachment proceedings against Buckingham. Charles, to meet his needs for money, resorted to quartering troops upon the people and to a forced loan, which he attempted to collect by prosecutions and imprisonments.
Forced to call Parliament again in 1628, he was compelled to agree to the Petition of Right, in return for a badly needed subsidy. Charles adjourned Parliament when it declared that his continued collection of customs duties was a violation of the Petition. Although Buckingham was assassinated (1628), the parliamentary session of 1629 was bitter. It closed dramatically with a resolution condemning unauthorized taxation and attempts to change existing church practices.
The Years of No Parliament
Charles governed without Parliament for 11 years after 1629, which were marked by popular opposition to strict enforcement of the practices of the Established Church by Archbishop William Laud and to the ingenious if disingenuous devices employed by the government to obtain funds. The royally controlled courts of high commission and Star Chamber waged a harsh campaign against nonconformists and recusants (Catholics), and large emigrations to America, of both Puritans and Catholics, took place. The trial (1637-38) of John Hampden for refusal to pay a tax of ship money greatly increased public indignation. Meanwhile Charles's deputy in Ireland, Thomas Wentworth, earl of Strafford, was carrying out a wide program of reforms through his oppressive policy of "Thorough."
Renewed Struggles with Parliament
Conditions in England reached a crisis when Charles attempted (1637) to force episcopacy upon the Scots, an attempt that was violently opposed by the Scottish Covenanters and that resulted in the Bishops' Wars. Unable to wage war effectively, Charles in May, 1640, summoned the so-called Short Parliament, which demanded redress of grievances before granting funds and was dissolved.
Another attempt to carry on the war without Parliament failed, and the famous Long Parliament was summoned in November. Under the leadership of John Pym, John Hampden, and Sir Henry Vane (the younger), Parliament secured itself against dissolution without its own consent and brought about the death of Strafford the abolition of the courts of high commission and Star Chamber, and the end of unparliamentary taxation.
Charles professed to accept the revolutionary legislation, though he was known to hold strong views on the divine right of monarchy. Parliament's trust in the king was further undermined when his queen was implicated in the army plot to coerce Parliament, and Charles was suspected of complicity in the Irish rebellion (1641) and its resulting atrocities, especially in Ulster. In 1641, Parliament presented its Grand Remonstrance, calling for religious and administrative reforms and reciting in full its grievances against the king. Charles repudiated the charges, and his unsuccessful attempt to seize five opposition leaders of Commons in violation of traditional privilege was the fatal blunder that precipitated war.
There were no decisive victories in the civil war until Charles was defeated at Marston Moor (1644) and Naseby (1645). In 1646 he gave himself up to the Scottish army, which delivered him to Parliament. He was ultimately taken over by the English army leaders, who were now highly suspicious of Parliament. He escaped (Nov., 1647) to Carisbrooke, on the Isle of Wight, where he concluded an alliance with the discontented Scots, which led to the second civil war (1648) and another royalist defeat. Parliament, now reduced in number by Pride's Purge and controlled by Charles's most powerful enemies, established a special high court of justice, which tried Charles and convicted him of treason for levying war against Parliament. He was beheaded on Jan. 30, 1649. To the royalists he became the martyred king and author of the Eikon Basilike. By his opponents he was considered a double-dealing tyrant.
His opposition leader was Oliver Cromwell, in charge of the Parliamentary army.
This resulted in the terrible Civil War. Charles surrendered in 1646 to the Scottish Army, who passed Charles to Cromwell's army for £400,000. Two years of negotiation followed, for which Charles was unsuited, apart from his religious beliefs which led to the conception of the Church, as Charles, a man of honour. Charles was eventually beheaded.
[3314]
BIOGRAPHY: Charles was born in 1630, and married Catherine of Braganza, daughter of King John IV of Portugal. He had no legitimate children but plenty of bastards.
King of Great Britain and Ireland, whose restoration to the throne in 1660 came after eleven years of Oliver Cromwell's republican rule.
Faced with a puritanical parliament and popular anti-Catholic sentiment (including the Popish Plot), Charles introduced the test act and other anti-Catholic measures, despite his preference for religious toleration and his secret alliance with Catholic France.
He refused, however, to allow parliament to exclude his Catholic brother James from the succession. Charles's reign saw the reintroduction of pastimes such as bear-bating and theatre-going, banned during the Commonwealth. His own enthusastic pursuit of pleasure earned him the nickname 'the merry monarch'. Nell Gwyn was one of his many mistresses. His marriage was childless, but he fathered at least 14 illegitimate offsprings.
After his defeat at Worcester in the civil war, Charles took refuged from Cromwell's Roundheads at Boscobel House in Shropshire, hiding by day in a hallow oak tree in the grounds. 'The 'Royal Oak' which can be seen there today is said to have grown from an acorn of that tree. Charles II's dying words were reportedly 'Let not poor Nelly (Nell Gwyn) starve'.
[11290]
BIOGRAPHY: King of England and Scotland, who succeeded his brother Charles II in 1685. James was born in St James's Palace in 1633.
Several attempts were made to exclude him from the succession because he was a Catholic, especially following the alleged popish plot to murder King Charles.
James's pro-Catholic policies aroused intense opposition, and when he produced a Catholic heir (James Francis Edward, the Old Pretender) open revolt broke out.
He was deposed in 1688 and the glorious revolution put his Protestant son-in-law and daughter, William and Mary, on the throne. James's attempt to regain the throne was thwarted at the Battle of the Boyne, after which he spent the rest of his life in exile in France.
