[2682]
In 1217 Ferdinand became King of Castile, which crown his mother renounced in his favour, and in 1230 he succeeded to the crown of Leon, though not without civil strife, since many were opposed to the union of the two kingdoms. He took as his counsellors the wisest men in the State, saw to the strict administration of justice, and took the greatest care not to overburden his subjects with taxation, fearing, as he said, the curse of one poor woman more than a whole army of Saracens.
Having inherited (1230) León from his father, Ferdinand permanently united the Kingdoms of Castile and León. Ferdinand spent most of his reign crusading against the Moors. He took Córdoba (1236), Jaén (1246), and Seville (1248) and occupied Murcia (1243). He thus completed the reconquest of Spain, except for the kingdom of Granada, which became a vassal state. Ferdinand was planning an expedition to Morocco when he died and was succeeded by his son, Alfonso X. In 1671, Ferdinand was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.

[12088] Chief Scout of the World
[12089] Like his older brother, Robert, Baden Baden-Powell was an Army Officer. He served with the Scots Guards, one of England's most distinguished regiments. Major Baden F. S. Baden Powell was a pioneering thinker in the use of military aviation and a Fellow and later President of the Royal Aeronautical Society and was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Major Baden-Powell was the author of In Savage Isles and Settled Lands published in 1892. It recounts his "journey of some 50,000 miles ... extending over three years" as he traveled around the world to his duties as Aide-de-Camp and Military Secretary to the Governor of Queensland, Australia, and thence home via the Pacific, America and across the Atlantic. Some details of his career are found in Robin Baden Clay's work on the Powell family history.
