[2549]
Edward was born in 1442, and succeeded to the throne without dispute on the death of Henry. He married the widowed Dame Elizabeth Grey and had ten children: Elizabeth, Mary, Cicely, Edward, Margaret, Richard, George, Anne, Catherine and Bridget.
Edward, as the next Duke of York, was a pretender to the throne and claimed this on his father's death. He also proved himself in battle, further strengthening his claim, but he had to fight for four years until he captured Henry VI.
Edward had relied upon his cousin, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and Salisbury to occupy the commanding and political powers of his reign, whilst he dealt with administrative issues, and tried to arrange his marriage. This lasted for four years into his reign and then eventually Edward, decided to rebel against this strong influence in his life. He enrolled members of his wife's family and placed them in powerful positions at court, and married her sisters into the estates of many noblemen in the south of England.
Warwick teamed together with many of his allies in the north, including Edward's youngest brother, George, Duke of Clarence, and met Queen Margaret in exile in France and together overthrew Edward.
Edward retaliated in 1471, when he gathered an army to win the throne. His younger brother George, joined his side. His army was victorious at the Battle of Barnet and at Tewkesbury, and it was on his orders that his brothers killed the young Prince of Wales. King Edward was murdered himself shortly afterwards.
Edward was not a good leader, he spent a great deal of time ignoring parliament and then calling sessions to gain money for wars and battle which he never fought but retained the money.
He had huge amounts of territory, gaining more when he took the defeated Lancastrian's land. He owned one fifth of the land of England, with so much land with sheep, he vested an interest in the wool trade which was of great influence in the future prosperity of England. He lived in great wealth and riches, but did plough back a lot of money into the economy of the country. He was the first King of England to die with no debt.
[2557]
BIOGRAPHY: Edward was born in 1470, and was made Prince of Wales after the murder of the son of Henry VI. He was carefully trained for his future role and on the death of his father he was taken to London under the protection of his uncle and half-brother.
It was on this journey that Richard, Earl of Gloucester, who had been named Protector of the Kingdom, arrested the uncle and half-brother under the allegations of conspiracy, and personally escorted the young prince to England where he placed him in the Tower of London and called a council on June 13, 1483 to decide about the coronation.
Richard played to his audience accusing all and sundry of treason and executing the Lord Chamberlain immediately. He then confined the rest of the Royal family to the Tower and displayed himself to the citizens of London in badly beaten up armour, stating that he had just barely escaped assassination. He went on to murder the maternal relatives already arrested and started propaganda campaigns that the new king and the Duke of York were bastards, which may or may not have been true.
Richard was not popular for these dastardly deeds and had to manipulate a request from Parliament to make him accept the Crown, which of course he was more than happy to accept.
He went on a trip to the West Country to gain some popularity and to arouse some enthusiasm from the people and in his absence had the two brothers, (the young king and the Duke of York), murdered. (From http://www.camelotintl.com/heritage/edwv.html)

Richard's name first appears in Westmoreland Co Records in the 1703 inventory of Benjamin Henman together with his mother Anna and brother Robert. On 24 May 1742 Richard Sanford of Westmoreland bought from Daniel French Sr. a parcel of land on the south side of Holmes Run in Prince William County which later fell into Fairfax County. Richard immediately gave one half of his land to his son Robert and late devised the other half to his son Richard. On 22 Feb 1742 Richard Sanford sold to Richard Moxley for 40 pounds 350 acres "which Robert Sanford, dec'd father to Richard Sanford devised to his two sons John and Thomas." John having dies without heirs, the afsd Richard was in full possession by virtue of his father's last will and testament. The land was described as being on the south side of John Parry, dec'd, Thomas Sanford...to Joseph Sanford dec'd and Capt. Thomas Chilton.
Richard Sanford Senior made his will 20 July 1757 leaving his entire estate to his wife Susannah during her widowhood. He devised "the plantation in Fairfax Co. whereon he now lives to son Richard" and bequeathed negroes to son Robert and granddaughter Susannah Sanford, daughter of son Edward. Son Edward received the 200 acre plantation in Westmoreland County where Richard was living.
