[2720] BIOGRAPHY: As able as his brother, Rufus, but with a keen sense of justice. The royal administrative corps really came into its own in his reign. The first seven years of Henry's rule was spent in protecting England and then conquering Normandy from his eldest brother, Duke Robert. He ruled with an iron fist like his father and looked secure both in England and on the Continent until 1120 when his only legitimate son and heir was killed in a naval tragedy.
Henry I was the fourth and most capable son of William the Conqueror and Matilda, born 1068, and nicknamed "Beauclerc" (fine scholar) for his above average education. He married Eadgyth (who later took the name Matilda), daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland, who bore him two sons and a daughter. One son died very early, and the other, William, died in the wreck of the White Ship in November 1120, leaving the daughter, Matilda, as the sole heir.
Eadgyth died in 1118, and Henry married Adelaide of Louvain, but the union produced no offspring. Henry also had two fairly significant illegitimate children - Robert de Mellent, Earl of Gloucester, and Sibylla, wife of the Scottish King Alexander I.
Henry's was the longest reign of the Norman line, lasting thirty-five years. The first years of Henry's reign were concerned with subduing Normandy. His father divided his kingdoms between Henry's older brothers, leaving England to William and Normandy to Robert. Henry inherited no land, but received £5000 in silver. He played both sides in his brothers' quarrel, leading both to distrust Henry, and sign a mutual accession treaty barring their brother from the crown.
Henry's hope arose when Robert went on the First Crusade; should William die, Henry would be the obvious choice. Henry was in the woods hunting on the morning of William's death, August 2, 1100. He moved quickly and was crowned king on August 5, his coronation charter denouncing William's oppressive policies and promising good government. Robert returned to Normandy a few weeks later, but escaped final defeat until 1106, at the Battle of Tinchebrai. Robert was captured and lived the remaining twenty-eight years of his life as Henry's prisoner. Henry was drawn into controversy with the Church over the lay investiture issue - the practice of selling clergy appoints by the king to gain revenue, heavily opposed by Gregorian reformers in the Church. He ignored the situation until he was threatened with excommunication by Pope Paschal II in 1105, reaching a compromise with the papacy: he would officially denounce lay investiture, but prelates were to continue to do homage for their fiefs. In practice, it changed little - the king still had the deciding voice in appointing ecclesiastical offices - but it a marked a point when kingship was viewed as purely secular, and subservient to the Church.
A solution to the lay investiture controversy and conquest of Normandy were accomplished in 1106, allowing Henry to expand his power. Henry mixed generosity with violence in motivating allegiance to the crown, appointing loyal and gifted men to administrative positions. Roger of Salisbury, the most famous of Henry's servants, was instrumental in organizing a department for collection of royal revenues, the Exchequer. The Exchequer quickly gained notoriety for sending out court officials to judge local financial disputes, weakening the feudal courts controlled by local lords, and won the title "Lion of Justice". The final years of his reign were concentrated on war with France and succession concerns upon the death of his son William in 1120. The marriage to Adelaide was fruitless, leaving Matilda his only surviving legitimate heir. In summer 1135, Henry refused to give custody of certain key Norman castles to Geoffrey, as a show of good will, and the pair entered into war. Henry's life ended in this sorry state of affairs - war with his son-in-law - in December 1135. He apparently died from over eating lamprey eels.
He settled the Welsh rebellion of his brother's reign and fortified Wales with many castles. The end of his reign was dominated by a succession crisis where Henry forced his barons to support his daughter, Matilda, as heir.

MR. JAMES RICKETTS
Pioneer Resident and Civil War Veteran Claimed by Death
Large Funeral Monday.
James Ricketts one of Lexington's, oldest, best known and most highly respected citizens died of nervous trouble at his residence Saturday at 4 a. m. Mr. Ricketts had been a sufferer from nerve nervous trouble for the past year and had spent some time in Bloomington hospital hoping to find relief, but in vain. He finally lost his eyesight, which appeared to aggravate the trouble, and finally death came as stated above.
James Ricketts was born Sept. 15, 1844, in the state of Missouri. He came to place when only six years old and has resided here ever since, with the exception of one year spent in Chicago.
At the outbreak of the Civil war, he was one of fifteen young men who volunteered from Lexington in Co. G. 68th. Ill., Infantry. At the expiration of his term he re-enlisted in Co. C. 94th. Ill. Infantry. When that regiment was discharged, he joined the 37th., serving until the discharge of that regiment in 1866. During his last unfortunate Illness he often referred to his experience in the army and to his old comrades.
He was married to Miss Martha Devore, Feb. 22, 1867. To this union were born four children, William of Pekin; Mrs. Lurla Arnold of Bloomington and Oscar and Ray of Lexington; all of whom, together with the wife and seven grandchildren and one brother, John Ricketts, of Beatrice, Neb., survive.
In 1869 Mr. Ricketts was converted and joined the United Brethren church and had always been a faithful member, attending the services of the church long after he became unable to hear the words of the preacher.
Shortly before his death he spoke of being a Christian and that he was un-afraid to die.
Mr. Ricketts was also a member of the G.A.R. [Grand Army of the Republic] post. It was always his request to be buried as a solider, wrapped in the flag he had fought for, and in accordance with his wishes, he was buried with full military honors. The funeral service was held from the U.[nited] B.[rethren] church at 2:30 p. m. Monday. Rev. J. G. Braden, pastor of the church, conducted the services and the body was laid to rest in the Lexington cemetery.
The pallbearers were Sons of Veterans, most of whose fathers had been members of the same company and regiment with Mr. Ricketts. They were H. E. Flesher, Stephen Turnipseed, Frank Davis, W. F. Payne, Frank Dennis and John A. Ashabran.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral services were:
Mr. Louis Moschel, of Pekin, Mr. and Mrs. John Phinney and George Dunkle, of Bloomington, Mr. Jos. Devore and family of Towanda, Mrs. Bert Hibbs of Normal, Newton Devore of Pontiac and Mrs. Ruey Seabert of Peoria.
[7698] John was living in Beatrice, Nebraska at the time of his brother Ray's death in 1915.

Henry Hart Bartle, 71, for many years a respected and beloved citizen of Claremont on Friday of last week passed from this life. Mr. Bartle, a pioneer businessman of the community, had lived here for 18 years and had by his kindness of heart and friendly manner made all admire and love him.
Funeral services were held in Pomona Monday afternoon, with Rev. A. D. Stauffacher in charge of the service. Burial was on the Oak Park cemetery.
Mr. Bartle was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 27, 1858. His father went out into the new and rough land of Oklahoma to do work among the Indians. He proved to be not strong enough physically for the demands made upon his strength and at the time of H. H. Bartle's birth, he had a pastorate in Chicago.
Boyhood Days in Mid-west
Mr. Bartle spent his early boy-hood days in Illinois and Michigan. He was the fourth in a family of eight children and often talked of the happy group they made around the table, of the long line in the family pew, or the circle at family worship. His parents always had had a home with an acre or more of ground to give these growing children space and occupation and if he was the most restless and most likely by initiate mischief, it is probable that he was also the one who took the largest share of home tasks and duties. He developed a regard for promptness and thoroughness that all through his life for his father's discipline, though not unkindly, was somewhat stern and rigid.
His early teen years and high school days were spent in Plattsmouth, Nebraska where he began to form the friendship of older people whom he revered all through life.
When he was a. 17 years old when his father took over a 40-acre farm on the edge of town in Creston, Iowa, continuing in the ministry also. It was here he met his wife, who with has father had moved from Galesburg, Illinois. Mr. Bartle was devoted to her with a deep and reverent love. Commenting on this relationship, Rev Stauffacher said, "To him she was the rarest spirit that ever lived." Before they were married they both moved out to the prairies of Nebraska, where she taught a year previous to their marriage.
College Trustee
Mr. Bartle's father was trustee of Tabor College and although he wished his son would attend college and train his voice he did not, to his lasting regret. Mr. Bartle enjoyed working with his hands, and it was in Nebraska that he learned the trade of blacksmithing. Later they moved to Kansas City, where he went into the offices of the freight department of the Burlington railroad, two of his brothers being railroad men.
Upon the illness of his oldest daughter and the necessity for her to come to California for her health, Mr. Bartle moved his family to the foothills near Redlands. It seemed impossible at the time for him to go into the city where he was to have been engaged in railroad work, so once again he turned to the trade of his young manhood, and in it he continued, doing less and less of manual work and depending more and more on the selling of implements and garden tools.
During the time that he was in Mentone, near Redlands, he gave freely to the life of the church and community in music and social contacts. He was the music for the little mission church, he sang for all social functions as he had when he was a young man. With his wife or by himself, he called on those who were ill or shut in and always they would urge him to sing for them.
Eighteen years ago he years ago he came to Claremont where he established his business. Throughout this time his wise counsel and assistance has helped in the development of this community.
Man of Marked Ability
Of him one of his a friends in Claremont has written:
"He was a man of marked ability, a great reader, a thinker, and with a sense of humor that ran through his conversation he made those happy who talked with him. By untiring industry and close attention to business he set an example to any who would succeed. His sterling honesty and upright conduct marked with broad sympathies for all good causes made him a helpful man to the community. We shall miss his face and voice but memory will carry them for many years to come.
"In the loss of his wife, Mr. Bartle was deeply affected and always since her death his friends could notice a tone of sadness which filled his life. His home was happy and in the love and care of his daughter, Helen, were centered all his affections.
"From his good life, we who remain take hope and courage."
His surviving relatives are one son, W. Hart Bartle, Pomona and one daughter, Miss Helen S. Bartle at home. There are three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. John Christiansen, New Haven, Connecticut, and Mrs. Thomas C. Shaw, Cleveland, Ohio, and one brother, George J. Bartle, Creston, Iowa.
