And whereas, I being aged and my wife soe, and not knowing how long it may please God to continue my life, and not knowing what debts and charge may arise before I leave this world, my will is that my sons and my daughters and their heirs shall pay their equal parts and shares of my debts and charges after my decease. And my daughters, Sarah, Hannah, Ann and Martha, and the heirs of Abigail, shall have â46 apiece with what they have already had, to be paid as money out of my estate after my decease. By the charge as above mentioned I intend that if there be any extraordinary charge, so that the improvement of my estate will not maintain me. [856] From John Sibun's book Our Town's Heritage 1708-1958 Hebron, Connecticut, published by Douglas Library, Hebron, CT, 1975: "The first white men to settle in town were Timothy Phelps and William Shipman, who arrived in Hebron from Windsor in June 1704. The area, then a wilderness, was used by the Indians as a hunting ground, and the few white men who knew of its existence passed through to other locations. The first two houses were located along Route 85 sourth of today's center. Approximately on what is now the Hilding driveway, Shipman built his homestead and Phelps constructed his home across the road on the land now owned by the Porter family. It is possible they worked on their property during the summer months only for the first two years, and returned to their families in Windsor when winter set in."
Timothy moved with his younger brother Nathaniel to Hebron in 1690. Hebron was incorporated in 1708, and Timothy was one of the first selectmen. Another brother Joseph moved there later.

[2470] Plantagenet is the surname, originally a nickname, of the English royal house of Anjou or the Angevin dynasty, founded by Geoffrey IV, Count of Anjou (1113-51), husband of Matilda (1102-67), daughter of King Henry I of England. The name is derived from the Latin planta ("sprig") and genista ("broom plant"), in reference to the sprig that Geoffrey always wore in his cap.
The oldest documented example of a coat of arms borne on a shield is where King Henry I of England is said to have bestowed on his son-in-law, Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, in 1127 A.D.: the azure shield bore four gold lions rampant. [Source: The Oxford Guide to Heraldry by Thomas Woodcock and John Martin Robinson.]
[2709] Only legitimate daughter of Henry I to whom the Crown was promised in her father's lifetime. On her father's death Stephen was elected. In 1139 her half brother, Earl Robert of Gloucester, and Miles Gloucester rebelled from King Stephen in her favour. Stephen was defeated and captured in February 1141 and Matilda, the widow of the Emperor of Germany, began her short reign as Empress of the English. Her ill temper and brutal manner soon exasperated the English and she was chased out of London and by the end of 1142 she had been reduced to control of much of the South and West of England, King Stephen, released from captivity continuing his reign. Normandy was taken from Stephen by Matilda's second husband, Geoffrey of Anjou in 1144, both titles passing to their son, another Henry.
Burke says she was betrothed in her eighth year (1119) to Henry. She was recalled to Henry's court in 1125 after the death of her husband, Emperor Henry V of Germany; Henry forced the barons to swear they would accept Matilda as Queen upon Henry's death. She was then forced to marry the sixteen-year-old Geoffrey of Anjou (founder of the Plantagent dynasty) in 1128 to continue the Angev in alliance. The marriage was unpopular with the Norman barons, but Matilda and Geoffrey produced a male heir, prompting Henry to force another oath from the barons in support of Matilda, and on his death (1135), Stephen seized the throne and Matilda invaded England (1139) inaugurating a period of inconclusive civil war. She and he second husband (Geoffrey) captured Normandy and in 1152; the Treaty of Wallingford recognized Henry as Stephen's heir.
[2699] BIOGRAPHY: He grew up in Anjou, but visited England as early as 1142 to defend his mother's claim to the disputed throne of Stephen; educated by famous scholars, he had a true love of reading and intellectual discussion.
BIOGRAPHY: His father Geoffrey of Anjou died in September 1151, leaving Normandy and Anjou to Henry. Henry's continental possessions more than doubled with his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitane, ex-wife of King Louis VII of France. After a succession agreement between Stephen and Matilda in1153, he was crowned Henry II in October 1154. Eleanor bore Henry five sons and three daughters between 1153 and1167; the relationship between Henry, Eleanor, and their sons Henry, Richard, and John proved to be tumultuous and treacherous. The empire ruled by Henry and his sons was considerably larger than the lone English is land - the French Angev in positions extended from Normandy southward to the Pyrenees, covering the counties of Brittany, Maine, Poitou, Touraine, and Gascony, as well as Anjou, Aquitane, and Normandy. Henry was extremely energetic and traveled quickly and extensively within the borders of his kingdom.
BIOGRAPHY: Henry revitalized the English Exchequer, issuing receipts for tax payments and keeping written accounts on rolled parchment. He replaced incompetent sheriffs, expanding the authority of royal courts, which brought more funds into his coffers. A body of common law emerged to replace feudal and county courts, which varied from place to place. Jury trials were initiated to end the old Germanic customary trials by ordeal or battle. Henry's systematic approach to law provided a common basis for development of royal institutions throughout the entire realm.
BIOGRAPHY: The process of strengthening the royal courts, however, yielded an unexpected controversy. Church courts, instituted by William the Conqueror, became a safe haven for criminals of varying degree and ability, for one in fifty of the English population qualified as clerics. Henry wished to transfer such cases to the royal courts, as the only punishment open to the Church courts was demotion of the cleric. Thomas Beckett, Henry's close friend and chancellor since 1155, was named Archbishop of Canterbury in June 1162. In an attempt to discredit claims that he was too closely tied to the king, he vehemently opposed the weakening of Church courts. Henry drove Beckett into exile from 1164-1170, when the Archbishop returned to England and greatly angered Henry over opposition to the coronation of Prince Henry.
BIOGRAPHY: Exasperated, Henry publicly announced a half-hearted desire to be rid off Beckett -- four ambitious knights took the king at his word and murdered Beckett in his own cathedral on December 29, 1170. Henry is perhaps best remembered for Beckett's murder, but in fact, the realm was better off without the contentious Archbishop. Henry endured a rather limited storm of protest over the incident, but the real threat to his power came from within his own family. Henry's sons - Henry the Young King, Richard, Geoffrey, and John - were never satisfied with any of their father's plans for dividing his lands and titles upon his death. The sons, at the encouragement (and sometimes because of the treatment) of their mother, rebelled against the king several times. Prince Henry, the only man ever to be crowned while his father still lived, wanted more than a royal title. Thus from 1193 to the end of his reign Henry was plagued by his rebellious sons, who always found a willing partner in Louis VII of France.
BIOGRAPHY: Henry succeeded King Stephen in October 1154, apparently after surviving a poisoning attempt by Stephen's supporters. He ruled his Empire of Britain, Normandy, Anjou, Maine, Poitou and Aquitaine with an iron rod and was the first king of England to add Ireland to his domains. With his fiery red hair and equally fiery nature, probably inherited from his mother, the Empress, Henry proved a king to be reckoned with and for 35 years he dominated Western Christendom as the most influential monarch of the day. His masterfulness was seriously challenged by the Thomas a Becket murder. The death of Henry the Young King in1183, and that of Geoffrey in 1186, gave no respite from his children's rebellion - Richard, with the assistance of Louis VII, attacked and defeated Henry, forcing him to accept a humiliating peace on July 4, 1189. Henry II died two days later, on July 6, 1189.

BIOGRAPHY: Following the murder of his father James came to the throne of Scotland at the age of fifteen. He had been with the rebellious lords who had defeated his father at the Battle of Sauchieburn and came to the throne not as naive as many of his contemporaries.
Wars with England was becoming something of a habit and James IV can claim to have been involved in two of them. The first was in support of the impostor Perkin Warbeck. Warbeck claimed to be a survivor of the murders of the princes in the tower and therefore the rightful claimant to the English throne. This was false but James was not to know this. He attacked England and was only stopped by Henry VII offering his daughter in marriage to James. James accepted.
Once more the tide of decision turned and James once again attacked England. This invasion was doomed and at Flodden field in September 1513 the power base of Scotland was virtually wiped out.
James' marriage to Margaret Tudor brought six babies into the world, of which only two survived to a fruitful age; James and Alexander.

Apparently Emil moved back home with hisfather after his own wife, Olivia died.) According to Celesta (Backhaus)Kudek, Wilhelm had asthma very bad which is what he died of among othercomplications.
A newspaper article we found doing our research at the Sheboygan FallsHistorical Society read that Wilhelm Backhaus purchased 40 acres of landon September 11, 1889 and a few days later purchased another 70 acrestotaling 110 acres.
[11314] Mrs. Backhaus belonged to the sparse remainder of the old pioneer womenof the county. She was a kindly and much esteemed woman. Her familylife and her relations to the world were all that could be wished, andher children and all those who knew her iwll preserve for her, a kindmemory.
She leaves 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral serviceswere held at Evangelical REformed Church in the town of Wayne, the Rev.A. graff officiating. Burial took place in the congregation's cemetery.
[11365] Emma Augusta died quite young but we haven't found any record of herdeath or cause of death as of 10/20/96.
We have been told by relatives that "she wasn't quite right"!!
[11366]
From Nancy Verhelst:
Emil made his home with his daughter, Vinelda and son-in-law, LudwigSchaub for several years. He had been a patient at Lutheran Hospital inBeaver Dam for 14 months. He was a farmer all of his life.
[11370] According to a Sheboygan area newspaper dated Feb. 13, 1913, a WilliamBackhaus sold a 49 acre farm southwest of Greenbush to an Edwin Enhelmanfor $4,700.
We have been told that this was a heavily wooded lot.
William was in the Samaritan Home previous to his death.
