[2622] Edward II, 1284-1327 (r.1307-27), was a weak king, dissipated and self-indulgent. His reign was noted for internal dissension and the loss of Scotland. His insistence on having his favorite, Piers Gaveston, at court caused rebellion among the barons, who eventually had Gaveston killed. Edward's later favorites, Hugh le Despenser and his son, virtually ruled England (1322-26). They made a truce with Robert I and recognized him as king of Scotland. Edward's wife, Queen Isabella, refused to return from France while the Despensers ruled. She entered into an adulterous alliance with Roger de Mortimer and invaded England. The Despensers were executed and Edward forced to abdicate. He was imprisoned and almost certainly murdered by henchmen of Isabella and Mortimer. (From www.encyclopedia.com)
Preceded by a forthright and powerful monarch, it was not surprising that his successor should be so weak. Edward II had few of the redeeming features of his father and much more resembled his grandfather. His idea of a good time was living as a rustic on his own play farm while the government of the kingdom was left to less than honest favourites.
As a result his reign was punctuated by sporadic explosions amongst his discontented baronage and the rise of a new movement called the Ordainers, who in many respects were the descendants of the reformers of 1258. The Ordainers were decisively defeated in 1322, but Edward failed to capitalize on his success. Instead he was overthrown by his queen and her paramour and put to a grisly 'end' in the dungeons of Berkeley Castle.
[2612]
BIOGRAPHY: His son, Edward III, 1312-77 (r.1327-77), was dominated by Isabella and Mortimer until he seized power in a coup in 1330, putting Mortimer to death and forcing his mother into retirement. He supported Edward de Baliol against the young Scottish king David II, but despite his victory at Halidon Hill in 1333, the Scottish question remained unsettled. In 1337 the Hundred Years War began; it would dominate Edward's reign.
He and his son Edward the Black Prince took an active part in the war, the first phase of which ended with the treaty of London in 1359. The war was renewed after various treaties and truces, but, like the Scottish wars, was inconclusive in Edward's reign. There were many constitutional developments in Edward's long reign. The most important of these was the emergence of Commons as a distinct and powerful group in Parliament. The king's constant need for money for his wars enabled Commons to assert its power to consent to all lay taxation. The Black Death (or Plague) decimated the population, producing a labor shortage that enabled the lower classes to demand higher wages and social advancement. Edward quarreled with the church, and the resulting religious unrest found a spokesman in John Wyclif. There was rivalry between a court party headed by Edward's son John of Gaunt and the parliamentary party, headed by the Black Prince. (From www.encyclopdia.com)
BIOGRAPHY: Initially under the tutelage of his mother and her lover, Roger Mortimer of Wigmore, Edward III bid his time. In 1330 he struck, seizing Mortimer and having him executed. With this Edward re-opened the war with Scotland and then against France, having realised that the defeat of Scotland was not possible whilst they received French aid. This helped start the 100 year's war which was the major feature of the reign. War of course needed money and to this end Edward reformed the coinage and came increasingly to rely on parliament to organise the economy and deal with law and order within the realm.

[4859] He was granted land called Massacoe in what is now Simsbury. In 1660 he was granted an island in the Simsbury River, amounting to about 21 acres, as well as an additional fifty acres on the mainland. In April 1666, he and John Moses, acting as agents for the town of Windsor, negotiated with Nassahegan, the sachem of the Poquonnoc, to buy 28,000 acres. For this service, the town granted him additional lands, known as Tilton's Marsh.
