[8305] From Andy Backus:
When Christian and Charlotte (Kruger) Backhaus immigrated to America, theship they were on started sinking half way across the ocean.Fortunately, another ship came along and rescued all of them. Thisinformation came from a family bible that Andrew Backus had. I have madecontact with Andrew through e-mail and he agreed that that is what he wastold by his grandparents but this information is not in writing.

From Nancy Verhelst (theory only):
I found a record in the Family History Library at Salt Lake City, Utahwhich stated that a Charlotte Fredericka Dorothea Krueger married aJohann Friedrich Christian (last name of Backhaus was missing) on May 7,1847 in Lebanon, Wisconsin, Dodge County. A possible theory of the abovewould be that when their boat started sinking they lost all theirbelongings including their marriage certificate. Their first born wasLouisa who was born in 1845 in Germany before they immigrated. So myguess would be that they felt their marriage was not valid in America andgot married again just to make sure it was legal.

From Nancy Verhelst:
Right now I can not verify this marriage date because the records weredestroyed in a fire in the Dodge County Courthouse for that year. However, Charlotte's obituary in the West Bend News 11/20/1892 statesthat Christian and Charlotte were married in 1842 in Germany and sixyears later they immigrated to America settling in Milwaukee. Four yearslater they moved to Kewaskum where they remained the rest of their lives.

From David Backhaus:
Christian's mother was Louisa Manteufel who died shortly after givingbirth to him. We do not know of any other children born to Peter andLouisa besides Christian at this point. Witnesses for Christian'sbaptism were: 1) Erdman Kopke 2) Christian Dittberner 3) FriedrichManteufel (peasant's son from Borkenhafen) 4) Dorothea Backhaus (peasantsdaughter in Farbezin) 5) wife of the carpenter Backhaus from Wassow. Theactual church records in Farbezin states that Christian was actually bornon October 26, 1820 (and not Nov. 28, 1820) and that he was christianedin Farbezin.

In the 1860 Federal Census it shows that a Friederich Mantoufel, 58 yearsold was living in the household of Christian and Charlotte Backhaus.

[8297] Charlottes' father's name was Carl Kruger and her mother's name is unknown.

[10203] I can not find any information on Louisa but in the 1860 U.S. Census Ihave found a Fredericka living with this family. So I assume that hername was Fredericka L.J. In the Catholic church, the children were givenadditional names as they progressed in the church which is why so many ofthe children have so many middle names.

I have also listed a second marriage for her to Carl Schultz. This hasto be verified yet, dates, etc. I found in the land records in theWashington County Courthouse that Christian and Charlotte (Krueger)Backhaus sold some land to a Carl and Louise (Backhaus) Schultz for$1.00. So the question right now is, was she married first to JohnBartelt (marriage record found in Washington County Courthouse) and thenmarried a second time to Carl Schultz?

[11363] From David Backhaus:
Friedrich Wilhelm Edward was born on October 27, 1947 in Farbezin.Witnesses for his christianing were 1) Fredrich Kruger, a buggymaker fromFarbezin, 2) Wilhelm Bartelt, 3) Friedericke Backhaus. Note: FredrichKruger was a sister to Charlotte Louisa Regina Krueger. This Krugerfamily is entwined with the one branch of the Farbezin Backhauses butalso married later in the USA into the BAckhaus and Goetsch families.

From Nancy Verhelst:
Friedrich Wilhelm immigrated with his parents from Germany to Milwaukeeand in 1852 they moved to Kewaskum. Friedrich Wilhelm died at his homein Wayne, Wisconsin after being ill for several years with kidneydisease. (NOTE: Friedrich Wilhelm's obituary states that his son, Emillived with him at his home. Apparently Emil moved back home with hisfather after his own wife, Olivia died.) According to Celesta (Backhaus)Kudek, Wilhelm had asthma very bad which is what he died of among othercomplications.

A newspaper article we found doing our research at the Sheboygan FallsHistorical Society read that Wilhelm Backhaus purchased 40 acres of landon September 11, 1889 and a few days later purchased another 70 acrestotaling 110 acres.

[5375] In the records at the Mormon Church Library in Appleton, Wisconsin, Ifound a Wilhemina Backhouse born in 1849 and she married a man by thename of Christian Tranton.

On the U.S. Census for 1860 and 1870 I can not find any Wilhemina listedfor the Backhaus family.

[11232] In Washington County records, I found a DAniel and Wilhelmenia (Stege)BAckhaus listed as the parents of one child, names Augustus Herman. However, Augustus was born in 1861 (no birthdates listed in Augustus'birth record of birthdates for Daniel and/or Wilhelmenia. This can notbe the correct Daniel that we are looking for because this would havemade Daniel 10 years old when Augustus was born!!!

I can not find any record whatsoever of any Daniel being born toChristian and Charlotte so far (entered 10/20/96).

I did find a Daniel and Michael Backhaus listed as being present at thewedding of Wilhelmenia and Friedrich Marquardt wedding. BUT -- in theU.s. Census I show a John Backhaus listed as the father of Wilhelmenialiving with Friedrich and Wilhelmenia in later years. So apparentlyDaniel and MIchael could have been Uncles of the bride, Wilhelmenia???

[11229] From Nancy Verhelst:
I have to re-check the children in this family yet. This does not seemright and with so many people by the same names, and more than onemarriage, etc. it makes it a little more difficult to straighten this out.

From Bernie Backus:
Frank's occupation was a carpenter.

[5422] From Nancy Verhelst:
This is definitely not the Henry Backhaus that owned a store in Kewaskumin the centennial book that Mom gave me. That Henry in the book ownedthe store in the year 1861 approximately. The Henry on this sheet wouldhave only been about 7 years old!!!

From Bernie Backus:
This Heinrich owned land in Section 9 and Section 16 south of Kewaskum in1915. By 1931 it was listed in the names of B.Backhaus and C.Backhaus.By 1958 it was owned by Christian Backhaus and by 1971 the land wasgone. Heinrich was a farmer.

[10229] In Washington County Courthouse it shows date of death for an Alvina as6/10/1950 but there are no parents listed on this birth record so I amnot sure whether this is correct for our relative or not.

However, in the U.S. Census, Alvina is only listed on the 1860 Censur andnot after.

Question: Did she die between 1860 and 1870??? She would have only been4 years old in 1860 and 14 years old in 1870.

[7545] From Nancy Verhelst:
Carl is listed in records at Washington County Courthouse as Charles.

From Bernie Backus:
Carl was a farmer all of his life.

[6265] Robert was the proprietor of the Republican House in Kewaskum and laterowned the Kewaskum Marble Yards. He was also engaged as a motorman onthe street railway.
