[9916] "Born in Cargill, Scotland, 1610, captured by Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, sentenced to have his name proscribed from MacGregor to Magruder, and with 150 other prisoners was sent to the Maryland Colony of America. He was bound to some colonist for eight years service. He is thought to have married and started a family in Scotland before his exile, and had had a son Robert MacGregor educated in Edinburgh, who also came to America afterwards."

Alexander MacGreuther, the immigrant, was an Officer in the army of Charles II. He was captured at the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and sent as a prisoner of war to Virginia through Barbados. In 1652 he ransomed himself and received a grant of 500 acres of land at "Turkey Buzzard Island" Calvert County, Md. which was near the Patuxent River. At the time of his death in 1677 he owned about 4000 acres of land known as "Craignaigh, Dumbland, Good Luck and Anchovie Hills."

[9811] He was Civil and Military Officer of Prince George's County in 1696, Gentleman Justice 1697- 1705, Member of the House of Burgesses 1704-7, and one of His Majesty's Commissioners in 1696.

[14742] The 50 year span between children is highly suspect.

[12096] Richard's name first appears in Westmoreland Co Records in the 1703 inventory of Benjamin Henman together with his mother Anna and brother Robert. On 24 May 1742 Richard Sanford of Westmoreland bought from Daniel French Sr. a parcel of land on the south side of Holmes Run in Prince William County which later fell into Fairfax County. Richard immediately gave one half of his land to his son Robert and late devised the other half to his son Richard. On 22 Feb 1742 Richard Sanford sold to Richard Moxley for 40 pounds 350 acres "which Robert Sanford, dec'd father to Richard Sanford devised to his two sons John and Thomas." John having dies without heirs, the afsd Richard was in full possession by virtue of his father's last will and testament. The land was described as being on the south side of John Parry, dec'd, Thomas Sanford...to Joseph Sanford dec'd and Capt. Thomas Chilton.

Richard Sanford Senior made his will 20 July 1757 leaving his entire estate to his wife Susannah during her widowhood. He devised "the plantation in Fairfax Co. whereon he now lives to son Richard" and bequeathed negroes to son Robert and granddaughter Susannah Sanford, daughter of son Edward. Son Edward received the 200 acre plantation in Westmoreland County where Richard was living. Various bequests were made to daughters Frances Harrison, Elizabeth Cox and Ann Muse; to Augustine Sanford, kinsman; grandson Franklin Perry son of dec'd daughter Susannah Perry; grandson Richard Muse, son of Mary Muse, dec'd; grandson Thomas Muse, son of Sarah Muse, dec'd. Richard's three sons, Richard, Robert and Edward were named executors. The will was proved 30 Oct 1759.

1) From Chronological List of Northern Neck Grants; p.32; Daniel French sold 400 acres 1742 to Richard and Robert Sandford. Daniel French in his will 16 Oct 1748 left his estate for the use of his wife and then to Godson Daniel Sanford, his sister Margaret Hansbery and Edward Sanford. In 1782 they sold to Josiah Watson of Alexandria. Robert Sanford's 197 acre tract became the property of his eldest son Richard, who also sold to Josiah Watson, in 1794. Richard Sanford lived on his 206 acre tract until his death in 1799. This tract then passed to Presley Sanford, his youngest son, who sold in 1806 to James Hewett Hooe.
