[6304] Mr. Phelps settled in Simsbury, Ct., was made a Freeman in 1754, and represented his town in the General Assembly several times. He was a Lieut. in the militia, and served in the French and Indian war. He died in Simsbury, aged 50 years, after an illness of nineteen days, with the small pox.
[826] She was sister of Sarah Pettibone, wife of David's brother Amos Phelps.
The Simsbury Chapter of NSDAR is named after Abigail Pettibone Phelps. Charter was granted 8 May 1894.
[3149] Capt. Phelps settled in Turkey Hills, inSimsbury, Ct. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. His name is found many times in manuscript volumes in the state archives. He appears in state record of "Conn. Men in the Revolution," in 1776, in Woodward's Brigade as Lieut. in 2nd Company, also as Lieut. in pay roll in Danbury Alarm, and also in the New Haven Alarm, in Capt. Noah Phelps's Co. in 1779.
The descendants of Capt. Phelps have his original appointment as Capt. in the Revolutionary army. He died 17 Apr., 1811, in his 78th year.
He m. for 2nd wife, Hannah Humphrey. By her he had no issue. After Mr. Phelps's death she lived with her son Frederick Humphrey, in Albany, N. Y., where she died.
[4256] Capt. Phelps settled in Simsbury, where he was a merchant; was appointed Capt. by Govenor Trumbull in 1774, was engaged in the Revolutionary war, and was actively engaged with several others in arranging for the taking of Fort Ticonderoga. He was appointed by Gove. Trumbull as commissary for Connecticut troops in the Northern department, June 1775.
Says Connecticut Soldiers of the Revoluton, p 32. in account for moneys paid out of the public treasury of the Colony of Conn: "£10, May, 1775, to Capt. Phelps to ride from Ticonderoga to the Congress at Wtertown." "Continuing in service under Gen. Schuyler and Gen. Montgovery, reported to have died 14 July 1776." He died in Albany. He built the house in Simsbury now (1899) owned and occupied by Jeffrey O. Phelps.
[1144] Maj. Gen. Noah Phelps settled in Simsbury, Ct., where he was an active and influential man. He was a justice of the Peace, judge of Probate for twenty years, and was a Delegate to the Convention of 1787, to ratify the Federal Constitution. Early in the breaking out of the Revolutionary War he was chosen one of a committee to consider the advisability of taking Fort Ticonderoga, then occupied by the British, and in which there was stored a large amount of heavy artillery and other war implements, Capt. Phelps, Barnard Romance, Ephraim Buell, and Capt. Edward Mott, with others, composed this committee, Capt. Mott acting as chairman. £300 was raised from the Public Treasury though guaranteed by several patriotic gentlemen. This fund was placed in the hands of Capt, Phelps and Barnard Romance, with the request that they should go north and press forward this project. This resulted in the great and bloodless victory -- the taking of Fort Ticonderoga.
It may be interesting to his descendants to know the part Capt. Phelps acted as a spy. At the southern part of Lake Champlain Capt. Phelps was sent out to reconnoiter. He stopped over night at a farm house some little distance from the fort. Some British soldiers occupied rooms adjoining Capt. Phelps, where they were having a dinner party. Capt. Phelps heard them discuss the condition of the fort, and the position taken by the rebels, as they styled the people. Early the next morning Capt. Phelps visited the fort and cthrough the plea of wanting to be shaved.
While returning through the fort, the commander accompanied him talking with him about the rebels, their object and movements.
Capt. Phelps seeing a portion of the wall in a dilapidated condition, remarked that it would afford a feeble defence against the rebels, if they should attack in that quarter. The commander replied, " Yes, but that is not our greatest misfortune. All our powder is damaged, and before we can use it, we are obliged to dry and sift it."
Capt. Phelps soon after left the fort, employing a boatman to take him down the lake in a small boat. He entered the boat in full view and under the guns of the fort. He requested the boatman to exert himself and terminate the journey as soon as possible, The boatman then requested him to take an oar and assist, This the Capt. declined to do, being in full sight of the fort, by saying he was no boatman. After rounding a point that intercepted a view from the fort, the Capt. proposed taking an oar, which he did, and being a strong active man as well as a good oarsman, he excited the suspicion of the oarsman by his efficient work, who remarked with an oath, " You have seen an oar before now, sir. " This excited the suspicion of the boatman at the time that he was not a good and loyal citizen, but fear of superior strength prevented an attempt to carry him back to the fort. This he confessed to Capt. Phelps after the surrender of the fort.
Capt. Phelps returned safely to his command, reported the information he had gained and his observations, resulting in the great and glorious victory before referred to.
About this time Mr. Phelps raised a company mostly at his own expense, and was appointed Captain. He served under Col. Ward in Ward's Connecticut State Regiment from 14th May 1776, to May, 1777. He was at Fort Lee, joined Washington's army, and was at the battles of Trenton and Princeton. Later he acted as commissary, and after the war served subsequently as Lieutenant-Colonel and Colonel Connecticut Militia. He died in Simsbury, 4 Nov., 1809, honored and respected. On his tombstone is inscribed: "A Patriot of 1776. To such we are indebted for our Independence."
Noah Phelps, (1740-1809), served in the New York and Jersey campaigns and commanded a regiment at the close of the war. He was born and died in Simsbury, Conn.

J.E.D. PIERCE ** We do not know if he was related to John, however, I have discovered that he was a Confederate Soldier from Coweta Co., GA who died of measles in camp at Richmond, Virginia, in 1862. His military service was very short. Claudine Putnam has discovered his wife's name was Mary Ward. Also John E.D. Pearce married Mary M. Ward October 8, 1851 in Fayette County, GA. He was living in Fayette County, Georgia as early as 1851 and was most likely a resident of Fayette Co., GA at the time he witnessed the writing of John Pearce's Last Will & Testament on 9 August 1854.

BIOGRAPHY: Anne was born on the 6th of February 1665 at St James's Palace and was the second daughter of James II and Anne Hyde. She married George, Prince of Denmark at St. James's Palace on the 28th of July 1683.
She had 18 pregnancies from which 13 were still-births, the other surviving children were Mary, Anne Sophia, William Duke of Gloucestershire, Mary, George.
She succeeded her brother-in-law, William of Orange, as Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland on March 18, 1702, at the age of 37. Her inheritance from William included a turbulent political relationship with France, notably a dispute that began in 1700 over the French claim to the vacant Spanish throne and broke into open war two months after Anne's accession. Known as the War of Spanish Succession, this conflict gave the British, under the generalship of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, four great victories in battle and established Britain as a major European power.
Anne lived for her husband, George of Denmark, who was thought of badly by everyone else at Court because of his few accomplishments. She personally nursed him in 1708 day and night as he lay on his death bed.
Anne's best friend for many years was Sarah Churchill, the wife of the Earl of Malborough. He was to be her political influence, until a major quarrel.
The death of Anne's only heir resulted in highly increased chances of a Jacobite succession, this led to the Act of Succession to ensure only a protestant could take the crown.
When Anne died of apoplexy in 1714, the Whigs called in George, Elector of Hanover to succeed. Her death was also the death of the rule of the House of Stuart.

[4871] Jacques was alderman of Valenciennes in 1560, 1561, 1566, and Treize Homme in 1577.
Jacques Hennot, late lieutenant of the military guard of Valenciennes, surrendered twice at Tournai, the first time with Guy de Bres, (the celebrated Huguenot preacher executed there in 1567), the second time after the death of the latter. He was then taken under guard toward Lisle, but escaped through the intervention of a band of Huguenot horsemen, after which escape all trace of him was lost by the authorities. He was pursued by order of Theodore Cresia, commandant of the Italian Cavalry under the Duke of Alva, who gave instructions to capture the body of Jacques Hennot wherever he might be found, promising an honorable sum to any one who should deliver him dead, or a double amount if the said Hennot should be delivered alive. Record of those orders are found in the "Confiscations et ordonnances concernant les troubles survenus a la fin du VXI Siècle" in the Royal Archives at Brussells, where also is found the decree confiscating all the lands and goods of Jacques Hennot, and branding him as an outlaw.
The next trace of him is in the documents of the British Museum relating to the religious wars of Flanders. There among the names of refugees is found that of Jacques Hennot, late lieutenant of the military guard at Valenciennes. This Jacques Hennot settled in an English province about 1598.

[9761] Thomas Noble was the immigrant ancestor of the largest family in the United States bearing the name of Noble. He was born as early as 1632, probably in some part of England. His exact origin and early history are involved in obscurity, the place of his birth, the names of his parents, and the year in which he came to his country, being alike unknown. He was, without doubt, here in 1653, and was the man mentioned by Drake, (History of Boston, p. 331) as admitted, on the 5th of January of that year, an inhabitant of Boston. The same year, he removed to Springfield, Mass., and opened an account at the store of John Pynchon. though not one of the founders, he may be considered as one of the early settlers of that ancient town, the first settlement having been made in 1636, only seventeen years before.
A few years after removing to Springfield, he visited England, as appears from an account-book of Mr. Pynchon. In 1664, in connection with several of his townsmen, he had liberty granted him to erect a saw-mill, on the west side of the Connecticut. Mr. Noble, though a man of activity and industry, seems to have early fallen into a habit of living "beyond his means," and as a natural result, soon found himself in debt. To secure the sums due to Henry Smith and John Pynchon, he was obliged, in 1667, to make over to Pynchon his house in Springfield, and all his lands, except a grant towards Windsor.
In the hope of improving his condition, and providing for the wants of a large and growing family, he was therefore ready to join those who were beginning a settlement at Westfield. The precise time of his removal to that place is not known. The lands there granted to him, July, 1666, on condition that he settled upon them before the last of May, 1667, having been forfeited by non-settlement, the grant was renewed, Jan. 9, 1668, and the time of the settlement extended to Nov. 10, 1668. At all events, he was there as early as Jan. 21, 1669, for at a meeting at Warronoco, (Westfield), at that date.
In his historical sketch of Westfield, Rev. Dr. Emerson Davis states, that Mr. Noble's residence in Westfield was about two and a half miles east of the present center of the town, on the farm where his son, Dea. Thomas Noble, afterwards resided, and which remained in the family until after the death, in 1791, of his great-grandson, Lieut. Stephen Noble, when it passed into the possession of Ambrose Day.
In Westfield he doubtless lived in peace and quite, until the commencement of "King Philip's" war, in 1675. Agriculture, necessarily the main pursuit of every one in the early history of a country, was his principal employment, although while at Springfield, during the winter, he worked a portion of the time as a tailor. At Westfield, he was so much prospered in his labors, as not only to bring up a large family of children well, but also to leave them at his death a respectable estate.

Last Will and Testament of Thomas Noble
"The last will and testament of Thomas Noble of Westfield, in ye county of Hampshire, in ye Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, being weak in body, but of perfect understanding.
Impr, I commend my soul into the hands of Christ my blessed Lord and Saviour and my body to Christian burial, in full faith of a blessed resurrection, through the rich Grace of God in Christ my Saviour.
Item, I give unto my son Thomas, that parcel of land lying in the farm purchased from Mr. Jn. Pynchon, from the gate beyond the house entering into the field bounded by the plowing land, the way to Springfield, John Noble's land and the drain all along the swamp.
Item, to my son Matthew, a tract of land in the same farm, lying by a ditch easterly and bounded at both ends by the river.
Item, I give unto my sons Mark and Luke, my little meadow, lying against the orchard of Noah Cooke and that homelot that I have bought and they have raised frames upon.
Item, I give the lot that the town gave me on the top of the hill against my house on the same farm, to all my six sons for pasture. Item, to my son James, a parcel of land and house upon it, on that farm that is fenced in, being six or seven acres more or less.
Item, I bequest the rest of this my farm lying bounded upon James northerly, Thomas on the east, Matthew on the south, ye river on the westerly sides, to all my sons, i.e., to my sons John, Thomas, Matthew, Mark, Luke and James, equally to be divided amongst them by my brother James Warriner and John Hitchcock of Springfield and by Capt Isaac Phelps of Westfield.
Item, I give to my son James, all my land in the plain, on this side the hundred acres and the lot by the way to Pochastuck.
Item, I give to my son John, the rest of my lot in ye fort meadow.
Item, I give unto my beloved wife, Hannah Noble, an acre of land reserved out of my son John's homelot; also half my dwelling house, that is to say, that end next the street, and halfe the land and orchard and barn we dwell on, and the other halfe of the house lot and barn to my son James, as also the thirds of all that I here will to my sons and after her decease, I give to my son James the whole of the house, houselot and barn and the acre reserved out of my son John's homelot.
Item, I give unto my four daughters, Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary and Rebecca L 20 apiece, to be paid them by my sons (viz.), Thomas, Matthew, Mark, Luke and James, to Mary and Rebecca about half a year after their marriage and a cow apiece at their marriage. And in case any of my children should dye, not leaving any issue behind them, then my will is that the legacies that I here give them, be equally divided among the surviving and also I order these my sons to find my wife fewel wood and two load of hay every year, so long as she shall remain widdow. Item, I give unto my wife also a cow and heifer, also all my household goods, which household goods I would have her at her pleasure dispose of to my two youngest daughters.
Item, my team (one yoak of oxen excepted), I give unto my three youngest sons, Mark, Luke and James. And for the well and faithful execution of this my last will, I ordain and make my beloved wife Hannah Noble and my son Thomas Noble joynt executors, to defray all my lawful debts and for that end leave one yoke of working cattle, a yoak and fatt oxen and the money in the Bay due me and all other dues, the which, when my debts are defrayed, the remainder I would have go to pay my daughter's portions. But in case the same shall be too little to clear my due debts, that then they are to raise what is sufficient out of the legacies, I have here given to my children, to do the same. In witness whereof I set to my hand and seal this eleventh day of May, Ano Dom., 1697.
Thomas Noble and a [seal] Signed & sealed in the presence of Edward Taylor Victory Sikes James Warriner

Edwrd Milstead, Sr. named in his wil his daughter, Elizabeth Franklin. He did not mention who her husband was. But, William Franklin's wifews named Elizabeth, and she would have been the right age to have beenEdward Milstead Sr.'s daughter. Since William and Elizabeth Franklinnamed a son Edward (a name that ws not very popular in early CharlesCounty) it seems likely that Elizabeth, wife of William Franklin wasEdward Milsteads daughter.
[12188] Thomas Milstead, son of Edward E. Millsted, died and will Sept. 6, 1737.John was listed in his brother Thomas' will September 6, 1737. The willlists nephew Matthew, also Samuel Milstead as Samuels[Matthews] son.Check will.
