George William Christy was born in southwestern (probably North Alton) Illinois in 1841. He fought in the Civil War for four years in the 27th Illinois Infantry Regiment, which was recruited from Madison and Macoupin counties.
According to the 1880 Census, George was 'deaf and dumb' and employed as a 'Lightening Rod Agnt'. Given that he left the 27th Regiment with a disabiity, it appears that he lost his speech and hearing in the Civil War. His brother Charles was a Corporal in Company F of 32d Illinois Infantry Regiment for two years.
George is the son of Sanford R. Christy, born in Virginia, and Mary Clark, from Kentucky. They were married in Greene County, Illinois, and raised their family in Alton, Illinois, on the banks of the Mississippi.
But I have not been able to identify Sanford's parents. See the Roadblock.
