[10138] IGI data gives Joseph Humphries ch. Nov. 8, 1702 at St. Stephen's Parish in Northumberland VA. Father: Joseph; mother: Mary. Beverly Fleet gives this: "Jo'n Humpres son of Jo's b. Nov 8, 1702." Another researcher has verified that the original parish record does give John and not Joseph as the child born to Joseph and Mary. However, Joseph was likely one of their children and a brother of John.

Joseph Humphries left a will written February 19, 1769, and probated in Northumberland Co., VA on June 12, 1769 (Record Book 7, 1766-1770, p. 354-5). Cited in Northumberland Co.,VA Vol #1, Abstract of Wills 1750-1770, p. 140 by Lewis. He is buried in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, VA, according to JoAnn Rork Williams.

Transcription of Will of Joseph Humphries (b. ca 1700; d. 1769).

This will was written February 19, 1769 and was probated in Northumberland Co., VA on June 12, 1769 (Record Book 7, 1766-70, p. 354)

February 19, 1769
Joseph Humphries, his mark
Signed and sealed in Presence of us, Eban Helms, John Daughity

Transcribed by JoAnn Rork Williams, and included in her book "Genealogical Anecdotes of Our Ancestral Families."

Joseph was a member of the Humphries clan that lived in St. Stephen's Parish in Northumberland County, VA. He is likely a descendant of William Humphries, who came to Northumberland Co., VA in 1640.

John Humphries, the likely person referenced in Beverly Fleet's note, lived in Northumberland at the same time as Joseph and may have been a brother of Joseph's. He married Ann Wood and had the following children: Winifred (b. January 9, 1728), Joseph (b. March 16, 1732) and George (b. July 27, 1741).

A William Humphries, perhaps an uncle to Joseph and John (or father to Joseph), is mentioned several times in Beverly Fleet's Northumberland VA records. "William, wit deed Williams to Lattimore 26 Sept 1706... William and Ann his wife on behalf of "their son" Tho Harding, bind him to Grant Jewsbury 24 July 1714... William and Anne his wife next of kin to Cuthbert Bennett, dec'd 20 Aug 1718." [Could Ann's maiden name have been Bennett? Could Thomas Harding have been her son by a previous husband?]

In the Administration of Estates Granted in Northumberland, we have more mentions of a William Humphries: "October 16 1728 (executrix Ellinor Humphries), September 14 1737 (executrix Winifred Humphreys). These estate papers have been lost." Note that when the will was filed Ellinor was named executrix. She can be presumed to be his wife, who had died by 1737, when the will was probated. The Winifred who was the 1737 executrix cannot have been the Winifred who was the daughter of John, since she would have been about 10 at the time of William's death. She may have been William's second wife or an unmarried sister of William and the elder Joseph (father of John, b. 1702). This William may be the same William as the one mentioned above, provided that he also had, at one time, a wife named Ann. Otherwise, we have two Williams.

Some researchers have speculated that John and William were both brothers of Joseph. There was, at this time, also a George Humphries of an age suitable to be a fourth brother in this family.

The WFT Census index for Colonial America (CD#310) shows the following Humphries (-ris) from St. Stephen's Parish: George Humphries 1748 and 1758 rent roll, John Humphries, 1748 and 1759 rent roll, Joseph Humphries 1748, 1758, and 1759 rent roll, Joseph Humphries Jr 1759 rent roll. In 1782 John Humphris Jr. is shown in Northumberland Co. enumeration (p. 38) 0402. Ann Humphris is also shown in Northumberland Co (p. 38) 0501.

[7175] Joseph was a soldier in the American Reolution from GA. He was employed in "Taking charge of public wagons and teams Sept. 13, 1788". He was living on Big Shoal Creek in Franklin Co., GA by 1787 and was a J.P. from Franklin Co., GA 1789-1794. He then moved to Jackson Co., GA. where he was a Justice of the Peace 1796-1798.

When he died he had an estate valued at $2,680. (Possible brothers: David, John, George, William, Thomas, and Uriah.)

From Judith Alef, Portland, Oregon:

Joseph was accorded recognition as a Patriot for services rendered to Revolutionary forces, taking charge of public wagons. -- Heritage of Lafayette Co MI- LDS 976.283 -F300

He was a member of the Georgia Constitutional Convention of 1798 from Jackson County, Georgia, and was a Captain of "Gum Log Company" -- Franklin County Regiment of Militia in the 1790's.

Notes for Captain Joseph Humphries, Jr. (b. 1745 Northumberland Co., Va)

Joseph Humphries, Jr. was the sixth child (third son) of Joseph Humphries and Elizabeth Tignor Humphries of Northumberland Co., VA.

A note on a family group sheet compiled by Evelyn McFarland: "In 1790s, Rebecca and Haneys, Jacksons, Sparks, Camps all liv. near Chauga Creek, Shoal Creek Chauga Church, N.C., also bordered Tugaloo River -- boundary between N. C. and Ga.: church estab. in Ga. 1806, Chauga Bapt. Church Records. Uriah, Shadrack & Geo. W. moved to Ga."

Joseph Humphries was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He appears in the DAR rolls. He is also listed in the Georgia's Roster of the American Revolution by L. L. Knight, as noted in Mary F. A. Word's book "John Bryson Word." Knight's Roster of the Revolutionary War shows that Joseph Humphries received a grant for his service.

He migrated to Franklin and Jackson Counties, GA after the war. He became very active in land. He was a Justice of the Peace in Jackson Co. and witnessed many deed transfers. Also, land that he and Rebecca owned was bought and sold several times, as shown by both names on the deed records. His name appears on the tax lists of 1802 and 1808 for Franklin Co., GA. He was a delegate to the 1798 Georgia Convention representing Jackson Co.

The Humphries family folder in the Ga. Archives, Dept of Archives & History, shows the following notations: Justice, Inferior Court, Franklin Co., Dec 22 1789-1794 resigned; Justice, Inferior Court, Jackson Co., Mar 26, 1796-1798, resigned; Member, Constitutional Convention, Jackson Co.; Capt 2 (or gun log) Company, Franklin Co. Regt. of Militia February 12, 1791. (From notes furnished by John D. Bates in correspondence January 1998.)

A sign in Fort Yargo Park in Georgia reads: "This remarkably preserved log blockhouse was built in 1793, according to historians. There are several references to Fort Yargo as existing prior to 1800. Its location is given as three miles southwest of "Jug Tavern," original name for Winder. Early historians say Fort Yargo was one of four forts built by the Humphries Brothers to protect early settlers from Indians. The other three forts were listed as at Talassee, Thomocoggan, now Jefferson, and Groaning Rock, now Commerce. Fort Yargo is now a State Park with recreational facilities." [The Humphries Brothers mentioned were sons of Joseph.]

1796: Joseph serves as one of original judges at first Jackson Co. Court, 1 August. 1798: Joseph was a Representative to Georgia Constitution Convention; voted adoption. (Source: Heritage of Lafayette Co MS, Vol. 1. Humphreys section by JoAnn McClung, George Stames, Margaret Speckels).

Joseph left a will in Jackson Co., GA Will Book A, pp 33-34. It was dated August 16, 1807 and probated Jan. 7, 1811.

From Ga. Intestate Records by Jeanette H. Austin: "Humphries, Joseph, decd. exrs of LWT, George, Shadrack, and Uriah Humphries, ask for leave to sell land 9/3/1810 Jackson Co. Ga Ordinary's Minutes.

While the family was visiting or temporarily moved back to Virginia, Joseph Humphries, [b. 1745 Va]. met his wife, Rebeckah Phelps (b. 1750 in GA) and married about 1770 in GA. Immediately after their marriage, Rebeckah Phelps and Joseph Humphries moved to North Carolina. Their first child was George Washington Humphries, b. 9 Aug 1772 in Franklin, N.C.. He was christened that Nov 9. Before moving to Virginia, the couple had Shadrach Humphries (1774). In Virginia, they had Uriah Humphries (1776) at the start of the American Revolution. By 1778, the family was on the move again. This time, back to Georgia. They had nine more children: Sally (1778), Polly ( 1780), Judah (Abt 1781), Hannah (1782), Judy (1784), Rebecca (1786), Nancy (1787), Sarah (1788), and Mary (1789).

With the Revolution over, their first son was married. George Washington Humphries married Abigail McDaniel (b. 20 Oct 1768 in Marion, Perry Co., AL) on Sep 26 1792 in Franklin, GA. [See Note 1 for Abigail's ancestry.] After having one child, Nancy (1794), the couple moved or visited AL. There they had Elizabeth Humphries (1799). The remaining seven children were born in Jackson, GA. They were: Allen (1800), Jesse (1802), Rebeckah (1804), Alexander (1806), James (1810), George Washington (1813), and Judy.

[13767] Jeffery O. Phelps was a financier of much ability, and his wide interests demanded much of his attention. He was prominently identified with the promotion of the Connecticut Western Railroad Company, of which he was a director, and was on the directorate of the National Exchange Bank of Hartford. Politically, a staunch Democrat, he sat in the State Legislature for the session of 1856, occupying concurrently the office of town clerk of Sims- bury. In 1867 his constituents elected him to the State Senate, and as such he came prominently and creditably before the people of the State. A Methodist of fixed conviction and steadfast purpose, he enjoyed the confidence and friendship of a very wide circle, and by his sound business judgment and strong personality rarely failed to carry through to successful culmination those projects to which he gave personal and resolute attention. He died August 6, 1899. His first wife was Jane, daughter of Colonel Austin N. and Amelia (Higley) Humphrey. She was born in Canton, Connecticut,

[13811] He graduated at Williston Academy. He took up a number of the business interests of his father, taking part also in State administrative activities. He was one of the projectors of the Connecticut corporation, Blodgett & Clapp. The original firm, which the incorporated company succeeded was one of the oldest in Hartford, and Mr. Phelps for a number of years was treasurer, succeeding his father to the presidency of the company immediately after the latter's death in 1899, since which time he has continued in that office. A prominent Democrat, Mr. Phelps has held many public offices, among them that of State Legislator, having been elected to the session of 1884. He served as clerk of the insurance committee, and was a member of the water board for two terms of three years each. In 1907 Mr. Phelps was appointed judge of probate for Simsbury, which office he still holds.

Mr. Phelps resides in the old Phelps homestead at Simsbury, and has made a scientific hobby of farming and stock-breeding. His herd of A. R. Jersey cattle has brought him into prominence in agricultural circles. According to the April, 1916, record of the Herd Improvement Association, No. I, of Hartford County, " Topsy of Fern Dell, a cow owned by State Cattle Commissioner J. O. Phelps, Jr., of Simsbury, outclassed all former butterfat records of the state. She produced 36.9 Ibs. of milk each day, and tested 7.6 per cent of butterfat, thus making in a month 1,125 Ibs. of milk and 85.5 Ibs. of butterfat. This amount of fat, according to Jersey figures, would churn just loo Ibs. of butter." Because of his knowledge of scientific stock farming, Mr. Phelps was in July, 1913, appointed State Commissioner of Domestic Animals. Mr. Phelps is a member of the American Jersey Cattle Club. It is not only in this generation that the Phelps family has endeavored to advance the standard of American stock ; his greatgrandfather is reputed to have been one of the first in the country to import a merino ram, paying for the animal he then secured what was, at that time, most probably considered a fabulous price, seven hundred and fifty dollars.
