Obituary Mrs. Mary Phelps
Mrs. Mary phelps, pioneer of Yankton, died quite suddenly at Sacred Heart Hostital at 7:30 last evening, of complications due to advanced age, but so well had she been of late that that the news of her death was a surprise to both immediate relatives and her many friends in the community. Mrs. Phelps had been visting her daughter, Mrs. Peter Rokusek. Of 509 Locust Street, and only the day before decided to go the the hospital for care and treatment. The end came after a bright and comfortable day, during which Mrs. Phelps appeared wonderfully well and able to visit with the members of the family. Mary Wilson Brown was born at St. Charles, Illionis, april 7, 1846, where she spent her early years.
At Caledonia, Minn. Miss brown was married to Edward Phelps, the date of their marriage being August 10, 1869. They moved to Yankton in 1879 and took up a homestead of 160 acres west of the city, where they resided many years and raised their family. In 1902 the old farm was sold and Mr. AND Mrs. Phelps moved to Parker to reside on a farm they owned there, and Mr. Phelps died there May 18, 1904. Since her husband's death Mrs. Phelps has resided at Parker, with frequent long visits here, where she was very widely known and very popular, especially among her old friends in the woman's relief corps, where for many years she was a very active member.
The deceased was all her life a member of the Presbyterian faith. The surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. Peter Pokusek, of Yankton; and Mrs. Mary Bones, of Oregon, and two sons, Edward of Parker and John of Oregon. Mrs Phelps is also survived by a brother, Finch Brown. Who resides in Vancouver. The funeral will take place from the home on Locust Street, but arrangements will not be completed until the absent relatives are heard from.

Coroner & Public Andministrator
April 17,1952
Office of the Coroner & Public Administrator of Shasta Countyia. The results of an examination showed he had myocarditis, generalized arterioselerosis, or in other words a heart attack. Harriette Phelps statement to me was, that John had got up about 5:15 a.m. And built a fire and sat around for awhile then said he was going back to bed. She went in the room about 7:30 a.m. And found him on his knees, resting his head on the bed. When she felt of him she knew he had expired.
As his wife Harriette Phelps was present I made no investigation of John's estate, so do not have knowledge of any of his properties. The funeral was conducted by Meininger's Mortuary and burial in the Redding Cemetery, Redding, California. Trusting this is the information you wanted, I am.
Respectfully,
E. Suge Stanford

George Ernest excelled in sports. In high school he was an outstanding football player, but an average student. He attempted college at both the University of Chicago and the University of Colorado, but not being studious, found academia not to his liking. He did however meet Evelyn Maria Riley and they were married.
Returning to Creston, Iowa, he helped his father in the family business and bring up his family. As his father became more involved in managing his other affairs, George assumed more responsibilities in the family business until that operation was solely his. As George Jennings started his retirement, George Ernest became more involved in the banking business, and after his father's total retirement took control of the First National Bank of Prescott, Iowa, remaining there until his retirement.
George Ernest was involved in many social activities, a member of the International Brotherhood of Elks, National Toastmasters, Prescott Fire Department. Ernest was a Air Raid Warden during the Second World War. I remember as a small boy, we took Sunday afternoon drives in the car, on December 7, 1941, while out for our Sunday afternoon adventure, we were parked at McKinley Lake in Creston when the news of Pearl Harbor came over the radio. He was very upset and cut our drive short to return home. He tried to enlist, but was rejected due to his age. He was too young for the first war and too old for the second; that saddened him for many years.
Ernest's hobbies included fixing old furniture, collecting antiques and watching professional football. In politics he was a Republican, and later in life was a profound Baptist.

Not much is known of Isaac Whiting Ensign's early life except that he must have received a good education to have accomplished what he did in his later life. He obviously knew Cornelia Phelps before she moved to Georgia from Simsbury. Family records state that "Isaac was in love with Cornelia and followed her to Georgia", moving there about 1844. Only one letter written by Isaac has survived and that was to his wife while she was visiting in Simsbury in 1849.
The letters are some written to Isaac before his marriage. Letter #6 was written shortly after the previous letter from Cornelia and was a joint letter from his sister Abbey, his brothers Nathan and Ralph and his mother Mary Tuller Ensign. It is a newsy letter giving all the news from Simsbury. Letter #7 was from Sara Goodwin who must have been a friend from Bloomfield, Connecticut. From this letter we pick up that Isaac must have lived initially in a log cabin in Forsyth, Georgia. Letter #8 was from a man friend, Isaac Thompson. It contains considerable insight into the politics and religious activities of the day in Connecticut, and also alludes to the assumption that Isaac was indeed a Christian at this time of his life. Letter #9 is another from Sarah Goodwin written only months before Isaac and Cornelia marry and gives him the rundown on the local news from home The final letter in this group, #10, was from his brother Moses David telling some of the news of his family in Simsbury.
[5598] The Phelps and Ensign families that had been intertwined in marriage on several occasions once again came together on September 30, 1846 in Forsyth, Monroe County, Georgia. So far no records of the details of the marriage have been located except for the date. It is interesting that Isaac Ensign born in 1747 was the Grandfather of Isaac Ensign and also the Great Grandfather of Cornelia Phelps! This "Cousin marrying Cousin" was quite common in this period.

[7857] Lt. Thomas Clagett Prather was killed during the French and Indian War in the battle at Royal Hannon, Pa., with a force of 100 under Capt. Beall (Oct. 11, 1758). He served under Capt. Beall from October 9, 1757 to May 31, 1758 and June 16, 1758 until his death. He left a son Thomas, born December 16, 1751 who with his wife, Mary Phillips (a cousin) took the Wilderness Trail to Kentucky in 1777-1778, settling in Herrodsburg. Much of the information on the Prathers of Kentucky is contain in the "Louisville First Families," by Kathenne Jennings, a copy of which is in the State of Ohio Library. - Source: GB Prather
