[625] According to his niece, Minnie Klein, "Uncle Karl was a shoe cobbler and for some reason [upon his arrival in America] found it difficult to get work in his profession in Norwalk and he went to Elyria where he worked at a shoe repair shop and later opened up his own repair shop in Elyria until he retired and sold his shop."

[3172] BIOGRAPHY: Just one week old when she came to the throne of Scotland, it was obvious a Regent would have to be appointed to rule in her name. The next in line to the throne, the Earl of Arran was designated this position.
In keeping with the political marriages that were common place in this era it was Arran who agreed to the betrothal of a seven month old Mary to Henry VIII's son, Edward. The marriage was not to take place until Mary had reached the ripe old age of 11. This betrothal was not much more than a peace treaty between the two nations.
Arran was Protestant in his religion and it was this religious leaning which led to the Catholics snatching away the infant Mary, crowning her Queen of Scotland and denouncing the betrothal. This act infuriated Henry and England savagely attacked Scotland.
The Scots became increasingly split between the pro-English, Protestant, camp and the pro-French, Catholic, faction.
Upon the coronation of Edward as King Edward VI the English occupied Scotland. Mary fled to France where she married the Dauphin 11 years later. So it was that the Queen of Scots married into the French monarchy rather than the English. Mary's mother, Marie of Guise Lorraine replaced Arran as Regent and with French support drove the English out of Scotland. Scotland now stood as a French colony.
Mary returned to an increasingly Protestant Scotland at the age of 18. She led a fascinating life. She was married to her cousin, Lord Darnley. Upon discovering his penchant for affairs she had him murdered. She then married his murderer, the Earl of Bothwell. This led to her downfall as the Scottish people would not accept Bothwell as King. She was therefore forced to abdicate in favour of her only son, James. This was a turning point in the fortunes of Britain as James was to be the first ruler of both England and Scotland. (From Camelot International http://www.camelotintl.com)

BIOGRAPHY: Mary, Queen of Scots, was executed on the orders of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England at Fotheringay Castle in Northamptonshire.

[13050] St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University is one of the earliest buildings designed by I. N. Phelps Stokes, an architect who had studied at Columbia and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During a long career, Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (known as Newt to his friends) designed institutional, residential, and commercial buildings throughout the country and undertook several urban planning projects, but he justifiably considered St. Paul's to be his masterpiece. The chapel was so important to Stokes that he and his wife had their ashes laid inside; a tablet on the pier to the right of the chancel marks the location. Besides his design work, Stokes served on the New York City Art Commission and compiled the famous six-volume Iconography of Manhattan Island.

In 1894, architect Charles McKim prepared a master plan for Columbia. This plan focused on an imposing library, with a chapel strategically sited to the east. Initially, no funding was available for the chapel, and it was not part of the academic complex that opened in October 1897. However, in 1903, two wealthy philanthropists, Olivia Egleston Phelps Stokes and Caroline Phelps Stokes, offered to finance the chapel as a memorial to their parents.

The Stokes sisters’ one condition was that their nephew, I. N. Phelps Stokes, of the architectural firm of Howells & Stokes, design the building. St. Paul's Chapel was the first building at Columbia that was not designed by McKim, Mead & White. At first the Stokes' had promised Columbia $200,000 for the chapel, but they became so enthusiastic about their nephew's design that they ended up spending substantially more. Construction began on St. Paul's Chapel in 1904, and it was dedicated in 1907. In 1966, the chapel was among the first buildings in New York City designated an official landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

I. N. Phelps Stokes (1867–1944) was a prominent New Yorker, a Trustee of The New York Public Library, and a member of the Art Commission of the City of New York. He combined his family's deeply rooted social conscience with a love of architecture, art, and history. After studying architecture at Columbia University and the école des Beaux-Arts in Paris, his first New York commission, with partner William Dean Howells, was to build the University Settlement House on the Lower East Side, the beginning of a lifelong dedication to low-income housing. Over twenty years of his life were consumed with the publication of "The Iconography of Manhattan Island," an invaluable six-volume compilation of images and documents relating to New York City's history, compiled from works in his own collection and from numerous other private and public collections. The Phelps Stokes Collection of American Historical Prints visually documents a 400-year sweep of American history, beginning with the European discovery of the Americas and tracing the transformation of the landscape into an urbanized United States at the end of the nineteenth century. The collection of more than 800 prints and drawings consists primarily of town views and historical scenes, as well as some maps.

[13049] Sheila Turcon in "The Journal of the Bertrand Russell Archives," Vol. 16, #2, Winter 1996-97: "Mothers and Daughters" (The following is one fifth of the review) A review of "Mildred Minturn A Biography," by Leslie Minturn Allison

Leslie Allison has written a loving and compelling portrait of her mother, Mildred Minturn Scott, who died when Leslie was only ten years old. This biography was only made possible because of the survival of letters between Mildred and her own mother, Susanna Shaw Minturn, as well as many other family members and friends, and of her diaries. At the outset, I must admit that I play a small role in the birth of this book. In 1983 I was employed at the Russell Project with one of my duties being the locating of new Russell letters. My letter to Leslie Allison inquiring whether any of Russell's letters survived arrived fortuitously. There were letters and diaries in the attic of her brother-in-law's house, then just months away from being sold. Leslie and I eventually became friends and I encouraged her to have this book published - an amazing achievement for a woman then in her 70s.
Mildred Minturn was born on 18 November 1875 into a wealthy and distinguished New York family who had made their money in shipping, the youngest of four beautiful sisters, separated in age over a ten-year span, and three brothers. Her uncle, Col. Robert Gould Shaw, was the commander of the all-black regiment in the Civil War whose story came to the screen in the 1989 film Glory. Her oldest sister, May, married Henry Dwight Sedgwick, author and brother of Atlantic Monthly editor, Ellery Sedgwick. The two middle sisters were Edith, who married Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes, the architect, and Gertrude, who married Amos Pinchot (who initially was attracted to Mildred), and became the chair of the Women's Peace Party during World War I. There are two photographs of the lovely and elegant sisters on page 48, one of several black and white illustrations.
Mildred's life is worth learning about, not simply because of her family or the famous people she came in contact with -- in addition to Bertrand Russell they included Rodin and Axel Munthe - but because she is representative of the first-wave of college-educated women who graduated in the 1890s to a world not really ready to receive them from families reluctant to let them go. Marriage was still the preferred path to follow, yet for many of these college graduates, a path they chose either not to follow or were not asked to join. After college, they were left in a state of limbo.
Mildred's writing talents and powers of observation first emerged in a diary she kept at the age of fifteen during an 1891 tour of Europe (p. 33). Her father was already dead in 1889 at the relatively young age of 53 and the trip abroad taken with her mother who clung to Mildred as her youngest and, after 1900, only unmarried daughter, was the first of many trips mother and daughter would take together.
