[246]
In late 1897 or early 1898, Guy Herbert and Bessie Roberts Christy moved 190 miles southeast to Paducah, Kentucky. Their children Herbert Estelle and Annie Elizabeth were born in Paducah, Kentucky in 1898 and 1899, respectively. Her grandparents in their 50s moved with them.
According to the 1900 census, the family still lived on 714 S. Fourth Street in Paducah, down near the railroad tracks. This was just about five blocks from the Ohio River.
Guy was a farrier who "made horseshoes to fit and correct different hoof conditions and deformaties. These were used for horses used in drawing carriages, hacks, buggies, and buckboards of the era. Interested in his work, as he made unusual shoes, he formed the hobby of making an additional one for himself, until he had 84 shoes."
"In 1900, he had his collection nickel plated, placed in a frame lined with black velvet, and it then hung on the walls of his blacksmith shop."
According to the 1910 census, Guy and family lived at 9 Benito Ave. and his father and mother lived next door at 7 Benito Ave. in Santa Cruz, California.
"About 1916 [when he moved from Santa Cruz to San Francisco], during World War I, he removed the shoes, wrapped them individually, and placed them in a box. Before he passed away in 1947, at the age of 76, he asked me to take care of his prized shoes." (Harold Bartle "Bart" Phelps, August 10, 1980)
Bart and Betty Phelps donated the shoes in 1980 to the College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University at Pullman, Washington.
Upon arriving in Santa Cruz in late 1907, he apparently attempted to find work in San Francisco. Conditions were not favorable there, and he then went to Nevada to the silver mines, to see if he could find work there. By 1909 he had his own blacksmith shop in Santa Cruz. However, as fewer and fewer horses where needed, and thus blacksmiths, he decided he needed to find a new line of work. In 1915 the family moved to San Francisco where Guy learned welding at the Heald School. He was employed there from the middle of 1916 to the middle of 1917. In October 1918, the family lived in the Glasgow Apartments at 525 Turk and Larkin Streets in San Francisco. (Source: Western Union Telegram) In January 1920, according to the Census, Guy was a welder in an autoshop; Bessie worked as a sales clerk in a store, and Anne was a stenographer in an auto dealership on Van Ness. In late 1921, Guy returned to Heald for about two years, where he became the welding and blacksmith instructor.
In the 1930 Census, he and Bessie continued to live in the Glasgow Apartments. Guys birthplace is mistakenly given as Scotland, but then the entry appears to be crossed out and possibly "IL" is added. His parents' birthplaces are Illinois, and Bessie's parents' are Kentucky. The monthly rent was $35 and they did not own a radio. In 1935, they were managing the Richelieu Apartments at 3415 22nd St. in San Francisco, California. In the 1940s, Guy and Bessie moved to 1574 - 78th Ave. in Oakland.
Bessie died in March, 1947, and eight months later, when Guy died, their daughter Anne and her husband Bart expected to find some money hidden in the house, and they looked throughout the house several times, but only found several small envelopes with a few dollars in them. Shortly afterwards, Betty had a dream and she told Bart to look in the heater compartment over the top of the door. There they found $1500 in an envelope.
A note from the Madison County, Illinois, county clerk, dated July 30, 1935, states that no record can be found for Guy's birth as records were not kept until later.
A wedding certificate gives his wedding date as June 16, 1897, in Illinois. The city's name is illegible. Burial plot documents shown location as Cypress Lawn, Colma, California as Grave 11, Lot 318, Section Palm. Death certificate used for all dates shown.

From his sister, Anne Christy Phelps: "He worked for the Union Pacific. He got off the train one day and dropped dead." Telegram from E.E. Cunningham to Guy H. Christy, dated Apr 22, 1927, states, "Herbert E. Christy died suddenly presume heart failure San Bernardino today. E. E. Cunningham" A notarized document signed by Herbert's grandmother, attests to his birth at 714 South Fourth Street, between Ohio and Tennessee Streets, in Paducah. Herbert's Aunt Ruth Kate Diuguid was married to a Cunningham in Paducah, KY.
A deed for a lot, "numbered 483, block Cedar," from the Mountain View Cemetery Association, California, grants Guy H. Christy the plot. This is dated April 25, 1927.

[5353]
DODGE, Walter Phelps, lawyer and author, was born at Beirut, Syria, June 13, 1869, son of David Stuart and Ellen Ada (Phelps) Dodge. His grandfather William Earl Dodge (q.v.) was the founder of the Phelps Dodge Co. (later Phelps Dodge Copper Co.) of New York, and leader in many civic, philanthropic and religious undertakings, among them the Syrian Protestant college at Beirut, of which he was a founder. His father (q.v. for ancestry) was professor of modern languages at the Syrian Protestant college, having the institution largely under his charge from its inception, was for many years president of the board of home missions of the Presbyterian church and was also president of the National Temperance Society and Publication house.
Walter Phelps Dodge spent two years studying in Greece and Germany under private tutors and on his return to America entered the class of 1891 at Yale, but left before graduation to continue his studies at St. John's college, Oxford. Later, after some three years of travel mainly in the south of Europe, he took a course in English law and in 1898 was called to the bar by the Middle Temple, London. In 1909 he was admitted to the New York bar. He made specialty of international law, practicing both in London and United States, but much of his time was spent in literary pursuits.
His published writings include "Three Greek Tales" (1892), "As the Crow Flies" (1893), "A Strong Man Armed" (1896), "The Sea of Love" (1898), "Piers Gaveston: a Chapter of Early Constitutional History" (1899), "From Squire to Prince" (1901), "That Disdainful Maiden" (1901), "The Real Sir Richard Burton" (1907), "The Crescent Moon" (1910), "King Charles I, a Study" (1912), "The Purple Iris" (1915), "Red Gold and Other Verses" (1915), "Studies of the English Sovereigns" (1918) and "Types" (1929). A biography of his wife, "Ethel Phelps Dodge," was published privately in 1929.
He was a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and a member of the Sons of the Revolution, the Reform and Wellington Clubs of London and the Racquet and Tennis Club of New York city. In religion he was an Episcopal and in politics a Republican. Personally he was a man of high ideals, somewhat aloof in manner, and with firm opinions which he stoutly defended. With these qualities he combined a lively sense of humor and a love for children. His hobby was the collecting the first editions and old coins. For recreation he enjoyed hunting, tennis, golf and above all travel.
He was married three times: (1) at Edinburgh, Scotland, July 21, 1888, to Ida, daughter of Alfred Godolphin Cooke, landowner of Manningham Hall, Yorkshire, England, by whom he had three children: Ellen Ada Phelps, who married (1) Gerald Curtis and (2) Capt. William Reynolds Purnell, U.S. Navy; Stuart Phelps, and Audrey Dodge (died in infancy); (2) at Sioux Fall, S. Dak., May 5, 1905, to Ethel Beatrice (Adlard) Coles, daughter of Percy Hamler Adlard, of Staverton Court, Cheltenham, England, by whom he had a daughter, Rosemary, who married Alexander Gregorieff, Jr.; (3) in London, England, Jan. 5, 1910, to Helen Louise, daughter of Edward Milton Steck, of Haverford, Pa.. He died in Paris, France, April 23, 1931.
