[754] BIOGRAPHY: Elizabeth Clopton was the widow of William Walker who died 12 Sept. 1718 (St. Peters Parish Reg., New Kent Co., VA.) She was a daughter of William Clopton Gent. who was born in 1655 in County Essex, England. He was a son of Rev. William Clopton of Eastwood Co., Essex, and his wife, Elizabeth Sutcliffe. The Clopton line has been traced back to Edward I, King of England. It has been written that Sir Walter Clopton, one of our ancestors, signed the Magna Carta on 15 June 1215 In this the rights of the subjects are compelled to be respected by the authority and these rights proclaimed are a part of the constitution of every English speaking people. Kentwell Hall was the name of the Manor House of the Clopton Family in England.

William Clopton, son of Elizabeth Clopton, must have been in Virginia by 1673 since his marriage to Am Booth, daughter of Robert Booth, occurred about that time. Am Booth was born in 1647 Her father, Robert Booth, was Clerk of York Co., Va. and a member of the House of Burgessess 1653-54. She was formerly the wife of Capt. Thomas Dennett whose will was proved 1 Aug. 1673, by whom she had four children.

"The Ancestors of William Clopton of York County, Virginia with Records of Some of His Descendants, to which are added Royal Iines," by Lucy Jane Erwin, 1939, includes Moss and Diuguid lines.

[1230] History of this notable family begins first in Scotland, and, although of Scotch extraction, it is said that they were originally Normans, and are numbered in the list of Conquerors under "William the Conqueror."

After the "Conquest" they settled in Scotland. From Scotland some went to Ireland, some to England, and many of them, like the Harwoods, are found there listed in "Doomsday Book." Their names also occur in the roll of the "Battle Abbey."

The names Alexander, Patrick, William and Hugh were common among them.

[1234] Midlothian is an area in the central lowlands of Scotland, occupying the valley between the Moorfoot Hills and Pentland Hills, straddling the North and South Esk rivers as they flow towards the Firth of Forth, and including the city of Edinburgh.

[12942] Aberdour OPR, 1706, Apr. 3rd: "Henry, Isabel lawful daughter to Patrick Henry & Jean Robertson in Aberdour baptised - witnesses were William Rainie in Dundargile (?) & James Youngson in Aberdour."

[1242] Reverend Patrick Henry emigrated to Virgnia about 1730. On June 11th, 1736, the Rev. Patrick Henry was chosen Rector of St. Paul's Parish in Hanover County, after which there is but little said of him in history.

The Will of the Reverend Patrick Henry, of Hanover County

In the name of Cod, Amen, I Patrick Henry, MA., Minister of the Parish of St. Paul in the County of Hanover, being, blessed be God, in tolerable Health, and of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner following:

First, I desire my body may be buried at the new Church in this Parish, as near to the grave of my deceased wife as may be.

I give and devise to my Daughter, Jane Gilliam, the following slaves, viz; Great Caesar, Old Caesar, little Caesar, Bob, Old Hannah, her daughter Hannah, Beck, Sis, George, Sail, Suke-Beck, Hannah, daughter of Beck Suke, Fanny, Milly, Dick, Alex, Will, Billy, Joshua, Lucy, Charlotte, Nanny, and her children now and here-after to be born to have and to hold the same above mentioned slaves, except Nanny and her children which said Nanny and her children, except her daughter Sukie, I give and devise to my grand-daughter Mary Gilliam, to her and her heirs forever, and to dispose of them by will or otherwise as she may think best.

I give and devise to my granddaughter, Elizabeth Gilliam, one negro girl named Sukie, daughter of Nanny to her and her heirs forever.

I give and devise to my grandson, Patrick Henry Gilliam, that tract of land on the Branches of Allan's Creek containing about five hundred acres, part whereof is in Goochland County and part in Hanover County to have and to hold the said Tract of Land after the death of my daughter, Jane Gilliam, to him and his heirs forever.

All the rest and residue of my Estate of what nature or kind soever, I give and de-vise to my Daughter, Jane Gilliam, and her heirs forever.

I give and devise to my nephew, Patrick Henry, Esq., present Governor of Virginia, the sum of Fifty Pounds current money, and do constitute and appoint him, my said nephew, and my son-in-law, John Gilliam, Executors of this my last will and Testa-ment and I do desire they may not be obliged or required to give security for the per-formance thereof, or cause my Estate to be appraised.
In Witness whereof I, the said Patrick Henry, the Testator, have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-sixth day of February in the year of our Lord, Christ, 1777.

PATRICK Henry (Seal)

Signed, sealed, published and declared by the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who signed the same as witnesses at his request.

Thos. BASKIN
WILLIAM Anderson, Jr.
JOSEPH THOMAS.

At a Court held for Hanover County on Thursday, the 7th day of August 1777, this Last Will and Testament of the Reverend Patrick Henry, deceased was offered to proof by John Gilliam, one of the executors therein named and was proved by the oath of Thomas Baskin, William Anderson, junr. and Joseph Thomas, the witnesses therto and also by the oath of the said Executor and ordered to be recorded.

Teste: William Pollard C.H.C.; July 25, 1814-A copy teste, Thos. Pollard D.C.H.C.

[1237] John Henry was an educated man. He was county surveyor of Hanover, presiding magistrate, and Colonel of Militia.

House of Burgesses, 1st Governor of Virginia, & Senator.

Is said to have removed to Virginia from England in 1739. In April, 1733, his brother, Patrick Henry, an Episcopalian minister, also came over.

The two brothers were very much attached to each other and ever afterwards lived not far apart. They were cousins of David Henry, who went from Scotland to London at the age of fourteen, and became a journeyman printer in the same office with Benjamin Franklin. He married a sister of Edward Cave, the found of the "Gentleman's Magazine," in London.

David was for more than fifty years associate editor of the Magazine, and in that publication describes his Henry kin as "more respected for their good sense and superior education than for their riches, as at every neighborhood meeting they were among the foremost."
